Hi there! Ive recently been doing a normal brakejob on my girlfriends fiat punto.
However suddenly the abs started acting up, at low speeds.

I take it all appart again, to find that the handbrake lever part, of the brakeshoe actually has rubbed against the wheelbearing housing.

Am i missing something important in the installing of this brakekit. Im hoping this has something to do with, why i cant figure out why the abs is acting up.
As can be seen, the part of the handbrake thingy, is touching the wheelbearing, making this groove. Is this supposed to be this way?
It seems like, the handbrake does not even use the actual pads. But just clamps the metal part, against the wheel bearing...?

Should the sprung part of the cable go behind the hardbrake arm?
On others I've seen that part of the cable pulls back and just the internal cable go behind and connect up to the arm
Just what I'm thinking too chris. I would also guess that the self adjuster is incorrectly fitted/adjusted or not acting on the shoes as designed because, when correctly fitted the arm would not be able to reach the hub before the brake was fully applied.

I think the best thing you can do Gantix is buy or borrow (local library usually a good place to start) a Haynes manual where you can see an illustration of how it all fits together.

I suspect your ABS problems are directly due to all the little metal filings which will have been flying around and contaminating the pick up (which is magnetically sensitive) A thorough clean up with lots of brake cleaner may do the job but, if you're unlucky, you may need to renew one or both hubs. There may be fault codes posted which could be read (best with Multiecuscan) which would point you at which of the sensors is playing up.

Do you have the same problem on both sides? If not compare the setup to see what is sitting wrong.

As said, the spring I think should be against a stop somewhere, so the cable is probably fitted wrong.

State which model Punto. Hopefully someone will be able to post a pic of what is should look like when working as intended.

Just found this on you tube which I think should be helpful? In particular you'll see how the cable is fitted and how the self adjusting mechanism is actually what allows the lever to act on the two shoes.

Basic problem:

That arm should not be capable of travelling far enough to catch the hub.

Either mismatch of drum vs shoe diameters.

Or an issue with the arms operation.


I had originally considered the selfadjuster was at fault.. but the handbrake should bypass ..ALL of that.


Not sure if Gantix changed the arms..some basic kits are 4 bare shoes.


AFAIK all fiat rear drum set.ups are similar.. (the primitive ones having no wormdrive selfadjuster)

Im pretty sure i figured it out. the selv adjuster needed to be turned two times.. So that the brake shoe was pushed properly against the drum, before the handbrake arm / lever thingy touched the wheelbearing.

In the top left picture, the dimple on the shoe lever, thats a "stop" meaning the lever is fully OFF??

I assume you unadjusted the handbrake cables before you fitted the new shoes, then akjusted the shoes ( after "settling them down, centralising then etc ) and then the cables?

you renewed the hub?
