Alfa question, but there are Fiats with the same setup...

Currently replacing the driveshafts on my Alfa 145, they're of what I'd call the Alfa/VW type, secured at the gearbox end with six bolts.

Normally, these driveshafts have three plates, each linking two of the bolts, not sure if to spread the load or to prevent the bolts working loose.

Anyway, the new drivshafts have a slightly different design of gaiter and the old spreader plates won't fit. I don't know if there was a change in design, my car is a mix of 1.9TD and 2.0 16v parts, but the shafts were sold as being for both, same part number on ePER.

So I've substituted star washers for the spreader plates and torqued everything up to the specified 40Nm.

Anyone done this in the past? Acceptable, or will my driveshafts fall off?

Only alternative would be to grind the spreader plates to fit, though there wouldn't be much metal left.
