1st gear fine
second fine
third not on yer nelly
fourth perhaps
five fine but the car is too slow and needs a while to get up to speed.

anyone has this and what is causing this?
my friend said just wear it in better by trying hard to force it.
the thing is nearly 20 years old i do not dare to.
do not know if gears or plates or something was renewed as I just bought the car.

Ok as you've not given any further info, here's a guess:

So 3rd gear won't select at all and 4th is dodgy (even with the engine not running? if it does it just might indicate a clutch problem) - but then why does 1st, 2nd and 5th select? so probably not the clutch. 3rd and 4th both work from the same syncro hub that is to say there is an externally splined hub on the 3rd motion shaft which has an internally splined collar which can slide back and forwards over it. slide one way to select 3rd the other to select 4th. It's quite a simple device so I doubt it's that which has failed. (not impossible though) much more likely that it's something to do with the selector mechanism for that hub, either internally (which I think sounds more likely) or externally. May well need a strip down of the box if there's nothing obvious to be seen on the external mechanism - which could cost "real money". A replacement box, with guarantee please, from a breaker, is often a more cost effective way to go.

Anyway, good luck with it all. If you can find the time to let us know how it pans out I'm sure we'd all be very interested to know.

Good trigger Jock, thanks.

Might be related to the cable adjustment.
Lever should align with 3/4 if at rest in neutral, but if not aligned, will be fighting the interlock mechanism every time. 1/2 & 5/R require a proper push one way or the other, so less likely to be affected by incorrect adjustment.

Seisento from the year 2000. When in neutral it is aligned with first gear and second. 5 gears.
First and third right next to each other. Fifth way to the right.
Clicking noise in third and fourth. Can only get in third when standing still. Can only get in fourth when below 20km per hour
