Hello all,

I own a 2012 Fiat 500 Sport, and it has 65,000 miles on it. The vehicle stalled while driving in reverse on two separate occasions. After that happened I took the car to a Fiat dealer and they could not find out what is wrong with the car (no codes in computer and they could not duplicate the stall). After picking up the car and driving it about 2,000 miles with no signs of any problems, the car would not start. After placing the keys in the ignition the key became stuck and the car would not turn over. While waiting for the tow truck I decided to try to start the car again and it started fine...I drove the car home and the next day when I tried to start the car again immediately the dashboard temperature gauge went through the roof and indicated that the car is overheating and should be turned off, however the car was cold and haven’t ran for 12 hours, and 5 seconds later the indicator went back to normal and the car drove fine. The battery is new, only about 5000 miles old...Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be? Is it the alternator? any other thoughts? I just don’t want to take it to the shop and they tell me that they couldn’t figure out or replicate the problem again...I just want to fix the car, and I don’t want it to die on me again or die while driving again...

I think the problem is a bad earth connection either from battery or a earth strap fastened to the body. It has been mentioned a few times that the earth straps get corroded inside the weave of the strap, so first check conductivity of all earth points, and security of fastners in engine bay.

If no luck just check the battery again when cranking engine, it should be over 9 volts, if not it may well be a cell going down in the battery.

Faults that you describe are possibly caused by the battery system at fault.

I know that other makes of cars throw up all types of wiered messages etc, and the battery system was to blame.

Good luck and hope you find cause soon.
