Hey everyone!

So I've got a 2003 Punto HGT and recently it's just been getting through oil like it's going out of fashion! Now I know this is old news and that these engines to get through the stuff but 1 litre every 400 miles is a bit excessive.

So the other day I jacked up the car and whipped off the under tray which was dry as anything, checked the filter and sump plug and gasket which were all okay and then went to check the rocker cover gasket and I spotted a bit of oil sitting on the intake manifold just under the fuel rail, so I cleaned up the area as best I could including the seal between the valve cover and the head, and then went to a good drive to see if I could pinpoint the leak!

The actual seal between the valve cover and the head is still completely dry with no weeping or anything so I'm thinking it's not the gasket, but there appears to be something seeping out of the part pictured with the 2 torx screws and electrical connector. What I wanna know is what is it exactly? I mean being a part of the fuel rail I would have assumed an injector but I can already see the four injectors? Sorry if I'm asking a really dim question here, but as I saw oil on and around it after the drive I was thinking maybe this could be the culprit?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Like I say it's nothing major but a leak is a leak and I don't like them :)

Thanks in advance! 20160302_161957.jpg

Thanks for the response!

No worries, I'm off on Monday anyway so I'll have a tinker about then..

But here are some better photos anyway that actually show the leak!

Update: it's the variator solenoid!

Will see if I can reseat the gasket and seal it up with some silicone gasket sealant on Monday, hopefully that'll do the trick..

Will be in the garage for cambelt & variator service next month anyway!

Finding the exact cause of leak is easier if you first clean the outside of the engine with degreasing fluid and stiff bristle brush. Protect the electrical parts with plastic covering. You should also check:
- Timing cover oil seal.
- Pump adaptor
- Fuel pump mounting gasket
- Distributor flange
- Cylinder head: Oil may seep from between the cylinder head and block if the head gasket between them has failed.
If the problem is not rectified then you must visit car service center or top rated Fiat mechanics.
