Question here for anyone with experience of the 1242cc FIRE engine.

Has anyone run one of these with a carburetor?

The reason why I'm asking, is because I'd like to fit one to my old 999 FIRE Uno. It's an '86 model so doesn't have fuel injection. To make life as simple as possible, I'd like to keep the carburetor to make it a quick swap.

I've been told that the 999cc inlet manifold will bolt up to to the 1242 head, so though it's not ideal the 999cc carb should then work ok with a bit of rejetting perhaps.

I've also been told that the Punto 60 and 75 engines don't have the lobe on the camshaft to drive the mechanical fuel pump. Anyone know if this is true, and is the only way round this is to fit an electric fuel pump?

And would it be best to use the 1242 exhaust manifold with a spacer to fit with the original Uno downpipe?

Ideally I'd like to use the Punto 75 engine because of its bigger valves/ ports in the head. Anyone know if this will still work ok with a carburetor? And will the original Uno distributor and coil be sufficient to run on the 1242?

Just trying to do an engine upgrade as quickly and as cheaply as possible. Any advice greatly received!

You can go for a 75 engine with a carb set-up. You have to make an adapter plate for it.

I have done for a friend a 1242 (60 engine) in a Panda 4x4 recently with the single carb from 4x4 just re-jetted.

Also have done 1242 with 2 twin down draughts. Have used part of the original manifold and welded parts from another manifold to it.

Alternatively you can do it with a single SU, which might not be the best carb in the world, but is very good for this sort of conversion.

For the manifold you have most likely to use a spacer but then you have to alter the exhaust anyway.

got this from polish cento website. what would it take for this to be done??

Just me thinking out loud, but if you got the sealed SU carb from a MG Metro turbo, could you use that for a turbo conversion on the Fire engine, just curious really if it theoretically could be done
