Hi

As someone who knows the PD TDI engine inside out, and knows the complete opposite about the 1.9 JTD, I am looking for hints and tips to keep my high mileage Doblo engine running well.

I know on the PD engines, high mileage engines often gum up due to EGR coking etc. Not sure if JTD do the same?

The engine is already mapped, and I don't wish to get more power, but really to increase the reliability and functionality of the engine, for the long term good.

I had a little look around, but couldn't see any typical JTD stickies for worthwhile tasks to do, and general hints and tips to keep running sweet.

Hi,
Which engine do you have? There are 8 and 16 valve versions, single and multipulse injection.
The injection systems seem rock solid, but EGR valves can give issues. Fiat introduced a restrictor/swirl plate that helps. It makes the valve open further and gives better mixing of the exhaust gas and intake charge. See https://www.fiatforum.com/miscellan...v-mjtd-egr-valve-restrictor-installation.html for a guide on the 16V mJTD.
I've had one vehicle with a VAG PD engine and the mJTD is much nicer.

Block the EGR, see for plates Ebay.
Restictor plate is useless, waste of money, (placebo effect, wishfull thinking...)

Peter forgot to add (again) that blocking or disabling the EGR (or other emissions control) makes the car ILLEGAL for road use and invalidates your insurance.

Cool

EGR blank it likely is then. Will be interesting to see how coked up it is. Will it bring on engine light? I have no EGR actually fitted to my Fabia but had the EGR physically mapped out so it doesn't even know its there (or not :D)

I should have clarified the engine is in a 54 plate Doblo cargo van - So 99% sure that is an 8 valve unit - 104hp? Probably about 130 now.

I run a fuel additive in my Skoda Fabia (cetane booster for a bit of umph) - I might try a few heavy doses in the van

Good call on the actual fuel. Might run some Vpower through it.

I've ordered an EGR plate and have asked a local remapping person if its easy enough to remove the EGR from the vehicle's onboard systems (as its remapped, I don't see much point in fiddling with that)

Well, I found out today from the current owner the map on it now did include an EGR delete and there is a plate fitted anyway. Oh well, £2.77 sort of wasted haha! :D

A common modification done on the VW group cars is to put a vent in the arch liner to allow air to pass by the side mounted intercooler. I have yet to familiarise myself with the location of the JTD intercooler, but did wonder if similar was possible. :)

Before I closed my EGR completely, I used that worthless 4 hole restrictor.
I was shocked to noticed the amount of carbon and sooth that had build up around the holes after about 6 months....image the amount of dirt that goes right through those holes...inside a place you don't want dirt and sooth in the first place...at least I don't.

You will encounter the same problems for sure, only a bit later...
No engine is designed to run on his own waste....!!

Well I didn't for many thousands of miles. Two EGR cleans and one replace in/at 41,241 miles. Nothing thereafter to 78,920. I guess one could argue a new EGR will be required in another 3K miles.

BUT NOT FOR ME! as I no longer have my Croma and have gone back to petrol :)

As for diesels engines re-ingesting the rubbish they spit out then I totally agree. Exactly one of the reasons I've gone back to petrol.

It is even worse for turbo diesel engines as there will always be a thin mist of oil from the turbo making a lovely sticky fine soot paste that gets deposited throughout the whole air intake and intercooler paths.

Diesels engines work best and cleanest at constant speed and load. e.g. ships at sea, long distance non stop trains etc. Use is motor vehicles is just about a worst operation scenario for the diesel engine. Dumb idea.

The "dirt and sooth" [sic] is going right back were it came from, the combustuon chamber. Yes, EGR may not be the perfect solution, but it does reduce NOx which cause significant local pollution issues. You may be happy to let your local children breath in nitric acid, just so you can have better fuel consumption, but I'm not. If you don't like EGR why did you buy a car with it fitted? There are other choices.
