Hi,

My Sedici (2006, 45,000 miles) with the Multijet 1.9 Diesel engine is over-heating. The oil temperature gauge will rise up when I accelerate at all hard, or up a hill. It can just about hold 60 on the motorway without the temp rising, but as soon as I reach a hill it will heat up and I may have to slow to 40 to avoid going into the red.

I hooked up the ODB cable today and recorded a few readings related to the DPF and so on:

DPF clogging: 87%
Oil degradation: 55%
Avg. temp last 5 regens: 605 C

No error codes.

I have been towing a trailer recently, and the problem started around that time. I am wondering if the towing may have degraded the oil.

Coolant level is fine, I squeeze the radiator tubes too, just in case there was a trapped bubble. Radiator fan is working.

I suppose it could be a fault with the temperature reading? I'm not actually seeing any adverse affects, loss of power, smoke form the exhaust, etc.

Has anyone had a similar over-heating problem with this engine that could point me to the cause of it? Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I've had similar before on a TD,
it was impaired flow through the oil cooler..,

worth checking you've not got a plastic bag wedged in there.. upsetting the airflow

otherwise do a forced regen and then change the engine oil,
simplest and cheapest things 1st,
Charlie

Hi, when you say 'oil cooler' do you mean the radiator? As far as I know an oil cooler is a heat exchanger inside the engine case, where heat is transferred from the oil to the coolant, and the coolant is then cooled by passing it through the radiator. I don't see how a plastic bag could get wedged in the oil cooler? But maybe you know something I don't.

I checked the radiator over today, nothing blocking it.

Thanks for your reply anyway.

Hi,
the cooler is normally positioned in front of RHS front roadwheel for MAX airflow,
a bit like thishttp://eper.fiatforum.com/eper/navi?COUNTRY=012&GRP_COD=103&SBMK=F&DRIVE=D&SGS_COD=0&MAKE=F&COMM_MODEL=NCRO&CAT_COD=2T&MOD_COD=194&SGRP_COD=9&ALL_FIG=0&LANGUAGE=3&NEW_HTTP=TRUE&PREVIOUS_KEY=SUBGROUP&ALL_LIST_PART=0&SB_CODE=-1&KEY=PARTDRAWDATA&PRINT_MODE=0&EPER_CAT=SP&WINDOW_ID=1&GUI_LANG=3

Thanks for the help.

I think my problem may be due to a faulty thermostat or water cooler - when first started it runs ok, but only after a while does the temperature go up. I will try going for a run then feeling the radiator pipes to check if coolant is actually flowing.

It was sold to me with a 3 month warranty, so I think I will try and make a claim on that, hopefully just a question of replacing one of the above components.

Hi,

So I have had the thermostat and valve replaced, but it did not resolve the problem.

The fans are working, so that leaves:

The water pump.
Faulty temp sensor (but I think the sensor might be in the new thermostat, so probably ok).
Anything else?

I got it hot, then checked the radiator, and I can feel that is hot. Also the heaters are able to blow out hot air. These things suggest that the coolant is flowing around at least.

Is there an easy way to check if the water pump is working?

I would suggest trying to use MAX cabin heat for a while ( where possible)

just to try and shift any air locks from the breaking of the system while fitting new parts,

does your car have a wing mounted expansion tank..??

that may be the best place to observe "flow",

Charlie
