why, has the belt snapped..??

AFAIK the 1.1's were all "safe" engines,
but the job is so simple and cheap..not really worth going without the car for a day or so if breaks down,

No,no nothing wrong it was just a general question, my sons gf has just bought a 09 fiat panda which she's picking up tomorrow, It was just something in general conversation with someone who said it wasn't, a safe engine, but it's nice to know, incidentally what is the cam belt service interval ?

service interval- darn good question

generally all FIAT belts ;
started at 72K miles, dropped to 36K Miles ( after a spree of failures)

conventional wisdom says @ 5 years / 45K Miles.

do belt, idler/tensioner bearing , and waterpump at the same time ..
as all driven by belt,

KIT is @£35, waterpump = similar,
cost @£100 to £130 depending on UK location ( labour rates)

Wil have to check service documents and see if it's been done ( it's got full service history)

The later ones aren't 100% safe and as Charlie says it's not an expensive job.
