MES set-up help required - please.

Hi,
I've got a netbook ( new) , and cables ( new)

downloaded the FREE MES,

I'm NOT technical for IT stuff , so please bear with me..

o.k.,
i've downloaded ELM drivers, that got me over the 1st hurdle..,
did a "settings check" on the MES , and it says all o.k.,

except Latency is high ( I've checked and unchecked the "High" tickbox)..nothing changes,

it shows 38,400 bps ,

High latency,

and if I try to scan for (ECU)faults,
it stops ( aborts) and says I need an Interface..,
I know very little about all of this tech.. hence the question

What interface..??

this is the bundle I bought;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2812252240...84.m1439.l2649

I'm using the RED cable to clear an airbag issue,

quite happy to swap to Yellow/ whatever leads ( as a test) ..BUT think it's a linking to Drivers / MES issue

it's on a '04 panda that I've used my basic reader on before so am confident the basics are in place..,
as usual any help is much appreciated!,

cheers, Charlie

Re: MES set-up help required - please.

when I 1st linked to the MES , and it aborted - it was set to KKL leads, so I've moved it to ELM 1.3+, as it's a 1.4, it appears to be the correct setting..,

Re: MES set-up help required - please.

Selecting the correct interface is crucial.

I also suggest you choose a specific USB port/socket on you computer and always use that socket when plugging in the interface. Also if you have two interfaces e.g. KKL and ELM then still use the same socket.

Use Windows : Control Panel : Device Manager : Ports to identify the Port number, eg COM5.

Do this for both interfaces in the same USB socket and you will end up with two different COM port numbers, e.g. COM5 (KKL) and COM14 (ELM). Now in MES Settings (PF9) set Interface 1 up for your most frequently used interface, ELM ?, set ELM 327 etc and also enter the correct port number (COM14 in this example).

Do the same for Interface 2 - set to K-Line (KKL) and COM5 (in this example).

Now when you use MES it will select the correct interface parameters and port numbers depending on which interface is plug in and you won't have to make any setting changes in the future unless you use a different USB socket or change your interface hardware.

Re: MES set-up help required - please.

thanks,
I'm about to give it a try..!!,

no good

despite me getting the latency down to 1 , and using the correct port..as tested in "settings",
it's not reading a thing..JUST a RED light on the ELM, no flickering

maybe try and use a different colour lead to read engine codes..??

Hi Charlie,

Have you downloaded the instructions from the MES site and followed them slowly?

See my PM to you.

Re: MES set-up help required - please.

As we're not far from each other, it would be easy to show mine working, then use your cables on mine to confirm they're ok, use my system on your car, yours on mine, etc. Also can compare the two machine's setup.

Working tomorrow, but Mon after work is possible, if you don't beat it before then.

Keep trying, but go indoors before you get too cold!

Hi Nick,
after a little experimentation,
and minor success..!!,

I've re-read this,

I've only got an ELM lead ( no KKL) , and have set the correct port + speed. etc = interface #1

When I change coloured "dedicated - ABS, hood, etc" leads, still Interface #1 -( currently I get the "disconnected" icon at F9 bottom left)
do things change for the port setting..??,

or does the 1 setting for ELM work irrespective.?,

when using solely the ELM - I get no F9 Disconnected symbol .

thanks,
Charlie

Re: MES set-up help required - please.

The coloured cables only correctly select which pin(s) on the interface are connected to which pins on the vehicle EOBD connector. As far a MES is concerned all the settings made on Interface 1 are correct then that is all that is required. The coloured cables are just a simple method to get the ELM pins mapped to the correct EOBD connector pins. Certain vehicle modules require different pin connection.

Take a look at this link http://www.multiecuscan.net/SupportedVehiclesList.aspx

This page basically explains all you need to know. Look your car up and refer to the coloured key notations for the ecu/module you are wanting to connect to. The right hand side of the page shows you the wiring/pin swopping that should be taking place in your adaptor cables.

Basically you have to use, IF REQUIRED!, the correct cable for the correct vehicle component you wish to connect to. Not all vehicle ecus require and adaptor cable. Again this is where the table I referenced above and the MES software will prompt you to use a specific coloured cable.

The "Connected" / "Disconnected" status on the bottom line below the F9 Settings area is telling you that status of the Interface connection to the car.

Re: MES set-up help required - please.

hi Nick,

I fully understand the relevance of the Colour coded short leads.. as you say they are wired-up for individual purposes..,

what I'm glad you've confirmed is the fact that the ELM lead and USB port are now aligned..and that is sufficient - thanks.

when the car in question = panda 1.1 8v ( 2004) is looked up it lists 4 x different airbag set-ups..how do I know which to select..??, apart from stripping the car down and reading serial no's on air-bags, etc..
just as importantly.. can I do harm by reading the "wrong" systems set-up..??

cheers,
Charlie

Re: MES set-up help required - please.

you wont do any harm
if it doesnt connect try the next airbag down etc
sometimes certainly with puntos the earlier ones connect to elm when it should be reading later onesie mk rather than mk2b
airbags can be a pain to get going, ive spent an hour before now trying to get comms with these
as the nun said to the vicar ,practice makes good sermon
