Hello

I have downloaded the FREE version of Multiecuscan on my laptop. I have contacted two different companies regarding suitable cables to connect. I only want to read and clear fault codes and possibly get live data. I have been advised on two separate cables and I need help on deciding which one is best.....

This one KKL http://www.scantool-direct.co.uk/mul...ible-121-p.asp It has different pins to select different modules. I've been told that I can't access the service reset function without the ELM but I don't need that (unless it re-appears!)

or

ELM 327 v1.4 from http://www.idiagnostics.co.uk/

Thanks

Phil

I used that one from scantool recently for clearing an airbag error in my car. Did the job perfectly. As far as I'm aware, one has things the other can't do. And I've read somewhere that there's a cable called OBDkey or something like that which could do what the two wires could do. Didn't read up much about it though.

Read this table here: http://www.multiecuscan.net/SupportedVehiclesList.aspx

It tells you exactly which type of interface KKL or ELM is required for connecting to any given vehicle on-board system and which adapter cable (if any is required).

Point to note.

1) The free version of MultiECUScan can only connect modules described in BLACK text.
2) KKL interfaces (from expensive to cheap Chinese ones) almost have a 100% connection success so buying a KKL cable is a fairly low risk exercise
3) ELM interface can cause all sorts of connection issues. These are generally attributed to cheap Chinese interfaces. See here: http://forum.multiecuscan.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1493

If you want guaranteed results, quality components and service then I suggest you buy from one of the MultiECUScan recommended distributers. In the UK these are Gendan Scan Tool Direct. http://www.multiecuscan.net/Distributors.aspx

I use a VAG cable with multieuscan and i have the 3 leads to swap the pins over for reading airbag, abs and another but not sure what that does. no connection problems at all full reset and clear even on airbag

you need a laptop and the multieuscan software which can be downloaded for free or usualy comes with the driver discs. plug it in run the software select your car model and your away. clear faults tweak settings , reset ecu/ turn on learning modes etc and of course read fault codes and fault history etc
