I'm new to the fiat forum i have a ulysse 2 litre petrol eleganza and the engine managment light keeps coming on and it runs like its running out of petrol i have had a scanner on it but i can't find out what the codes relate to so i wondering if any body on the forum can help . The codes are P1160,P1161 and P1160pd and P1161pd

For the most part, OBD2 codes are universal, so you can just put t5hem in Google, et viola!

P1160 for example, relates to the air intake temperature sensor.

Thanks for that but where is the air intake temperature sensor?

Be careful, very careful with fault code diagnosis.

OBD codes are generally universal but defined by clear rules.

A simple guide is here in these links:
http://www.troublecodes.net/OBD2/
http://www.obd-codes.com/faq/obd2-codes-explained.php

I did have a link somewhere to a better breakdown of generic and manufacturer specific codes but your P1160 is manufacturer specific denoted by the first digit being a 1. It may or not be the same as other P1160 codes on other makes of cars.

air intake temp usually either part of a maf or map sensor

better getting proper software with input and output monitors and oscilloscope function to read actual data the ecm is seeing

seen far too many folk use scanners usually bought cheap off the net

oh the code says crank position sensor so ill change that
clear fault
oh fault is back again and im stuck

oh it was a dodgy coil causing an imbalance and the crank pos sensor reading was erratic.

more than half of faults i see have had a bunch of new sensors and it turns out to be something silly. moral of the story is a code will show a fault indication not whats at fault most of the time

well put my man

you see so many idiots buying a 20 quid scanner then advertising thier diagnostic services on gumtree.

they are just spouting out names for codes and telling the owners to throw the sensors or dearer parts on.

works sometimes i suppose but its pure blind guesswork

main one i see is for fuel trim errors

people spending 800 quid on injectors and getting thier codes cleared to re appear after 50 miles or so
lol
a well known one in the game if you have the experience or proper monotoring equipment
