Just thought I'd say,

I hate/loathe/despise/want to smash all dual mass flywheels.

Sure, I understand them, and to a certain degree appreciate their duty in providing a cushioned blow to my sensitive gearbox....but lets face it - they usually cost more than the vehicle to replace.

First my Transit had a rubber mounted DMF which failed. Since I wasn't feeling particularly exotic I let a garage do the work and got suitably skinted.

Next, my Focus decides to give up and since I was feeling exotic I did all the work myself and still it cost a small fortune.

Now, the best of all, my Mercedes Vito has the tell tale sound of sledgehammers striking against each other......its just blissful :)

Now others - pledge your hate!

£700 to replace what is normally a slab of metal on most cars yet on our 1.9 diesel punto HGT it's an intricate and weak array of springs washers bolts and clips!? What is there to hate?

I still have the old one in a cupboard under the stairs it's going back in welded up if this new one ever fails

I'm starting on the Vito tonight. Should be so fun! Also, funny you should mention welding them up, I was/am seriously considering it!

DMF's seem a bit overkill to me. Clutches have springs built into them which absorb some torsional vibration/load. Okay not at idle when the clutch isn't engaged but still -my old diesel Pug never had a DMF and the gearbox was fine......even after 250,000!! If any gearbox was to fail from crankshaft vibration then surely a ****ty french Pug 106 gearbox would be the first.
