20 - 25 years ago some Rover/Honda PGMFi ECUs and early Bosch L Jetronic ECUs (and probably others) had sockets for EPROM and PROM chips. For the last 15 - 20 years, everything has used SMDs (Surface Mount Devices) that are soldered directly to the PCB. They're not impossible to remove and replace, but often very difficult without damaging the minute PCB tracks.
