Hey guys im getting a tapping noise when I excelerate. At first thought it was my tapets but I have a 16V so they should set automatic. I gave the car a oil change and filter change. Hasnt made any difference. Ive got a Pipercross Induction Kit on the car. But its not that. I stuck the standard airbox back on and still has the same problem. Its also not a wheel bearing as ive got new alloys on the car now.

Any ideas / help would be really good

Tapping is like a cycle bike when u dont peddle and makes that tick tick tick noise. Only happens when i excelerate (n)

I have a similar problem on my car. It sounds a little like a motor bike in the low gears but can be mistaken for tapping. I was just about to ask in a thread of my own if the problem could the exhaust weld on the manifold. I know that this is a weak area on a lot of fiats. (y)

Injection cars cant pink i dont think.

As above, all modern cars have knock sensors to prevent pinking.

Going back to the tapping noise, ...... does the tapping appear to be at half engine speed? If so then probably valve train related and just because hydraulic tappets are self adjusting there are circumstances that can make them sound noisy.

Partly right, but sadly modern emissions regualations, especially EURO have put limitations on knock control.

To reduce knock with ECU control you increase fueling and reduce ignition timing. BOTH of these, either individually or separately significantly increase emissions.

This means that the manufacturer will boundary limit fueling and retardation to ensure they meet the emissions criteria.

I have this exact problem with my Stilo Abarth, with pinking at high RPM and heavy loads (sounds like little washer hitting the floor as opposed to the more familiar diesel rattle petrol knock at low RPM).

Fiat confirmed map limitations.

One can try changing spark plugs to colder running ones OR have the ECU after market mapped where they won't care about EURO / emissions.

I have a strange sound coming from the panda 100hp at about 5k it doesn't do it all the time though and it sounds more of a rattling sound coming from around the dash area? Could be engine but sounds like it is coming from the dash. Don't fancy taking it in the dealers just yet as knowing my luck it will not do it when they test drive it
