Hi I have a fiat punto (1998), a light on the dashboard keeps flashing on and off and sometimes staying on for a period of time. Its the exclamation mark (i thought this was the handbreak but must also be connected to something else), the car is due its MOT soon and would like it sorted before then. On another note the car also overheats when idle so I think the radiator fan has gone, how much would this be to fix.

Thanks in advance

If its like ((!)) on the bottom left of the warning lights, it is the handbrake warning light. I didn't know I had one until my car went in for an MOT and he told me the handbrake cable needed some tweaking and hey presto I had a new warning light on my dash :) Prob will give you an advisory if it is anything serious though.

Radiator fan? £7 from scrap yard. Probs could get cheaper I didn't bargain with them. If it over heats on idle it is possibly not the fan. Check your coolant. It could be a faulty thermostat.

Check your oil cap too, if there is any white gunk under it then that is symptoms of a head gasket failure/failing get it seen to ASAP.

My punto overheats on idle it the radiator is dying though so I need to get it replaced.

Check the fan first. Open your bonnet, turn engine on and leave it until the fan comes on. It should take a few minutes for the car to really heat up.
