Incredibly irritating squeal from one or both rear wheels on my 2004 Multiwagon JTD - tends to happen on motorways, stops when you touch the brakes or change lanes, or randomly after 200 miles or so.

Only started late last year. Had third service at 32,000 miles this week. The dealer greased a few things, eg handbrake mechanism, declared discs and pads fit and well (still on originals all round) and sent me away.
Still squeaking!

Obviously I will return to North Staffordshire's largest family-owned independent garage, but - - - - any ideas what is going on here?

I've checked out the threads on changing brake pads - is that the best plan? Don't want to spend money unnecessarily.

Thanks for that. Not sure what the dealer did (no paperwork thru yet) but I'll check it out.
Can't believe it's the shield catching because the noise doesn't change frequency with speed - also it is very intermittent.
Is brake squeal all about pads vibrating in the caliper and against the disc because of a resonant frequency? Does the copper grease damp the vibration - do anti-squeal shims aid the damping? I've never thought this thru because I've never had rear discs before.
The other post-service phenomenon is a distinct diesel aroma in the cabin. Is this just dirty footprints on my carpets, or could there be a leak somewhere? No sign of increased fuel consumption or drips (yet).
Funny how cars usually go wrong after servicing!
