Hello Everyone

When I start my fiat Stilo JTD a warning as started to appear PREHEAT FAULT could anyone tell me what it means and what I have to do to correct it. Everything else seems fine.

Pre-Heat Fault

In the last week my fault has started giving a pre-heat fault message.

It starts as normal but about 5 seconds later the fault message appears then disappears withing a minute.

Would I be right in assuming this is a faulty glow plug?

If it is, how difficult are they to replace? I have no way of knowing which is at fault so I was going to swap them one at a time until the fault msg stops.

Mike

Hi I had the same fault - but took my JTD to an independant auto electricians so diagnostic kit was connected and fault was reported back to me

Turned out to be Number 2 Cyl heater plug open circuit, I bought new heater plug fitted just this one, you require long 10mm socket and 1/4 drive extension & ratchet (£7 + vat for heater plug from local motor factors) all faults now clear

The only hard bit is finding an auto electricians with the fiat diagnostic kit, I would not trust a dealer, especially after reading some of the accounts on this forum.

if you need any more info let me know (y) :)

Hello everyone sorry about this but had the Glowplugs tested and been told they are fine, they said now it could be a memory fault the warning is still coming up every time I start the car.Could it be the memory and if so what do I do, or has anyone any other thoughts what it could be.

By the way changed the front headlamp bulb hope it never goes again what a stupid design that is.

Hello where is this heater relay is it easy to fit and how do I test to see if it faulty

thank you

It's on the bulkhead (middle top) and if you look carefully you'll notice all the heater plug wires lead back to it.

Quite easy to remove, I think, but you're on your own as far as diagnosis is concerned (think it might be an Examiner job :( )

pre heat fault

Just spent oner £300 to get a pre heat fault fixed ( two months ago ). Now I have the same fault message on my dashboard.

The engine still starts.

Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

Cheers

Re: pre heat fault

About £30 to supply and fit one heater plug

Maybe another one has failed - it can happen

I don't want to take it back to those rip off £$%$"Q£$".

Am I right in thinking that if the car starts I am ok to drive it untill I find somewhere to get it fixed?

Cheers

Re: pre heat fault

Hi mate,

If it starts fine then its not going to do any damage to the engine to run it like that. Do you remeber what they replaced last time, was it a glow plug or was it the cold start controll unit?

Cheers,
Alan

Re: pre heat fault

this IS a glow plug issue, i had it on mine. changed glow plug 1, and it never came back.

£300 is shocking, but they are a pig to get to if the garage doesnt have much experience with the jtd

They replaced;
- Electronic control times 2 @ £104.86
- Glow plug times 1 @ £11.65
- Blade fuse times 1 @ £2.20
- Labour @ £216

I'm interested what you guys make of that!

Cheers

Re: pre heat fault

Hi mate,
As far as i am aware there is only 1 controll unit for the glow plugs, so i dont see why they needed 2?! (someone correct me if im wrong!)
The glow plug is about right as is the blade fuse. Labour seems a lot unless they had to do lots of diagnostics to find the fault, but in reality its either going to be the glow plugs or the controll unit.
The controll unit is shown as £58.82 on Eper
Potentialy it could have been a faulty controll unit and a faulty glow plug.
Imagine if it was just the blade fuse blown at the end of the day!! lol

Hope that helps,
Alan

JTD pre-heat fault reading

Hi, just a question ,stilo 1.9jtd covered in frost like most mornings lately, turn the key, starts straight away, the same as this morning, but after a few seconds a pre-heat fault code came up,then clears after about 10-15 seconds, tried it again ,on which it repeated the same order again? is this a glow plug on its way out??

Re: JTD pre-heat fault reading

Yes.
Probably worth changing all 4. Being a skinflint I only changed 1, got the fault light back again after a few months. ho hum.
