Hi Guys

Got a "loose connection" error message on Friday afternoon. Was sitting at lights, car ticking over, "loose connection" error, car died?? Leave it for half an hour and it starts again. After the error appears the car will try to start (turns over) but just won't fire. I've been reading the threads about the d4 connector this morning, could this be causing my problem??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Darren

I'm not to smart with the electronics on the stilo but sounds like you will need examiner to pin point this fault Decks/rroppe or tech might log in later sit it out and wait a while if anyones out there and has any suggestions then fire away and help him :)

Loose connection = bad connection and so often just taking a connection apart and reconnecting can do enough to brighten up the contacts and remake it good again. But contact cleaner usedd sparingly on the contacts really is the biz and well worth buying and having it handy for use at any time. Seems pricey at £4 but you'll need it lots so it's a sound investment:)

Which connector? Go for anything that would make your engine die and not supply fuel or ignition for a restart. Could be anything but D4 is a good start

I've had "loose connection" appear with no symptoms and then never reappear again. It's a true error though as the car has sensed wrong resistance somewhere. Getting fault code read might pinpoint area

Hi,

In the past when I've had this come up its when starting it then clears but about 2 weeks later a coilpack has gone down it's done this twice over a period of several months. My battery packed up a few weeks back and the loose connection came up about a week before it died. After the coilpack's and battery were replaced the message has not come back.

For reference, "Loose Connection" can also refer to blown fuses, although in this instance I would doubt it.

Yeah, I would say D4 is a good place to start.

Well, I just had the d4 connector apart. It was very dirty, gave it a blast with an air duster. Put it back together. The car has started first time about half a dozen times in a row. Going to take it for a run now to halfords for some electrical connection cleaner stuff, I'll have a go with that later. Don't want to jinx myself but the car seems to be idling better! It's defo a little higher anyway, used to sit abou 800 rpm now it's sitting at just under 1k??

Thanks

Darren

A further point is to wait until you get the 'check ok' message before you start the car,the battery has to power up quite a few modules/nodes when you switch ignition on aswell as turn the starter (especially cold engine) so if you wait few seconds before 'cranking' you wont get any 'false' messages.

Didn't make it to Halfords - car cut out again. 3 times in total - managed to start again each time after waiting for about 10 mins. Now though it won't do anything when I turn the key, I think the battery is drained - looks like I'll be taking the day off work to try and get it sorted. I don't even have a battery charger or jump leads!!

Thanks

Darren

Forgot to add - the red engine symbol on the display is staying on - didn't notice this before?

Thanks Again

Darren

A few more things to add to your shopping list at Halfords eh
Battery charger
Jump leads
Contact cleaner

Really difficult to diagnose your symptoms from a distance but keep piling in descriptions of what happens and you may get more suggestions from diesel owners

Does it die only at tickover or does it kill like turning the ignition off?
Is the red warning on permanently now?
Do you know anyone who can read off the fault codes for you?

I've organised to get the faults read tomorrow. Guess I should wait till after then before I go to Halfords!! It's a real pain in the arse - I'm an engineer and use my car for work!!!

There was a guy on here with examiner called Brown something? Lives just up the road from me (dundonald), haven't seen him on in a while though?

Thanks for the advice

Darren

You can buy basic fault code readers quite cheaply now or you can be more adventurous and rig up an interface and OBD2 connector to your laptop and read them off yourself. Both available on Ebay and worth thinking about as it's the way of the world these days

It's obviously something I'll have to invest in. I just looked on ebay. They have obd2 to 9 pin serial, I think I need to buy the can-bus compatible one? And what software do I need?

Thanks

Darren

There's loads of software, many as free downloads that will read fault codes and a lot more.

Interfaces change and update all the time so find one that lists the Stilo, most offer money back guarantee, make sure you stipulate serial or usb for your laptop

hello mate.
this sounds like the same fault i had with my jtd.loose connection would apear and the motor would just turn over.. i had a fiddle with the crank sensor on the underside of the clutch housing and it started.it happened a few more times so i purchased a crank sensor from fiat for under £20.00 and the problem was solved... try it,local garage fitted for a tenner so not an expensive repair,im 95% sure this is your fault my good man.....
all the best

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the advice. I'm now the proud owner of a brand new set of jump leads and a big feck off tin of contact cleaner! I managed to get it jump started yesterday, took it for a spin and then left it ticking over for about 15 mins, then beep beep beep - loose connection! Left it with the mechanic last night. Just spoken to him about 10 mins ago - he checked out a few things, found an issue with the battery. Reckons that when he put a meter on the battery it was reading 13v, then 5 mins later 6v??? He's going to fit a new battery tomorrow. I've to give him a call around 11am.

Thanks Again
