Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

Re: Stilo spring recall

Yeah the recall is a service solution...

It add's a plate to the shock to stop a breakage affecting the tyre's...

"On some fiat Stilo models under environmental conditions that require intensive use of salt on the roads, corrosive deposits may infiltrate the rubber plate supporting the front suspension spring, starting seats of corrosion which may lead to breakage of the spring after a period of time.

To avoid damage to the tyre should a spring break, a service solution has been identified which involves fitting a plate to contain the spring."

Thats word for word.

It appears that its not so much a problem with the metal more like other factors which can speed up damage to the springs.
Worthwhile getting it done by the sound of things...

Re: Stilo spring recall

When my spring snapped nick it didnt snap at the bottom but two coils from the bottom so what good will this plate be when the brake is Not at the bottom sounds like a cop out to me TBO :)

Re: Stilo spring recall

blast i'm affected(n)
anyone know if its a while you wait job or leave your car for a week job???
i bought my car from your garage nick so i might run it down to you (need to order some roofbars, paint and sill kickplates anyway)(y)

Re: Stilo spring recall

It looks like where the lowest part of the spring tapers in the shock absorber base it is smaller in diameter to the widest part of the spring so in theory if it breaks at the thinner part the spring could drop over the base plate...

The plate to be fitted makes the base plate wider than the spring so that cant happen... I'll try to post a pic later..

But I'd get it done on all cars just in case as uprated springs might not go but if they did there still be the same consequences  and if not just to get it off the recall register and stop the damn letters from fiat... (y)

Fiat have just released a recall to do with the front springs on all stilo's from start to chassis 00644197.

If you dont receive a letter and your chassis number is below the above then contact your local dealer..... (y)

Just thought I'd let you know..

Does any body for sure if FIAT keeps a look at the forum?

Re: Stilo spring recall

On Fiat OE springs the top and the bottom of the springs are smaller in diameter and the springs taper as they spiral to which makes compression with the ordinary type of compressor a bit fiddly :bang: you probably have a hydraulic press type there with you Nick the job then is simple. Now what about if our cars havnt got the fiat struts fitted but a standard strut of another manufacter will this plate still fit those struts ?

Re: Stilo spring recall

I'm confused. Surely the springs will be of a different specification depending on type of Stilo, 1.2 3 doors having a lighter spring than a JTD MW. So why would they recall all types when a bit of historical analysis will show which are more prone to failure.

Re: Stilo spring recall

hi,
My car is affected by this recall but i'v never had a car thats been recalled.
So it's all abit new.
Where does the letter come from ?
Do i have to take it back to the dealer i bought it from ?
If i don't get a letter and have to ring the dealer is there a recall number i can get from somebody to quote to the dealer ?

cheers

FIAT UK but if the car has changed hands a few times you may not receive the letter...

Best just call the dealer and ask them to check if your car is part of the stilo springs recall. they'll know exactly what its about...

Maybe all of them have had similar failure's or they're just protecting your safety...? Rather be safe than sorry?

At the end of the day its a safety recall I'm sure fiat have done their homework...

I wish I had your faith in fiat nick :)

Re: Stilo spring recall

Ha ha, 2 courtesy cars required for us then :p.

I wonder if I can get them to replace the drop links as well (obviously I'll pay for those!) as my front suspension is banging a bit!

Re: Stilo spring recall

So, do I have it right, the mod is purely about containing the spring pieces WHEN it breaks, regardless of the danger of a collapsed strut, rather than eradicating the problem by replacement of the springs?

What a shame, as the strut would already be accessed, not to just replace the springs, put in the spacer and then you can forget it. I wonder if it's worth taking along some new springs and getting technicians to put them in when they're rebuilt rather than just refitting the old ones

It would get rid of the Mary Celeste creaking from the front too
