Re: Stilo spring recall

Even though I can't see them having used different springs for the NZ marke does anyone know if this is a worldwide recall issue or does it only affect UK spec models?

Re: Stilo spring recall

I would suspect that NZ cars are to the same spec as UK cars and production costs would mean that they would standardise as many components as possible, therefore it has to be assumed that you guys in NZ have the same problem.

So, do I have it right, the mod is purely about containing the spring pieces WHEN it breaks, regardless of the danger of a collapsed strut, rather than eradicating the problem by replacement of the springs?

What a shame, as the strut would already be accessed, not to just replace the springs, put in the spacer and then you can forget it. I wonder if it's worth taking along some new springs and getting technicians to put them in when they're rebuilt rather than just refitting the old ones

It would get rid of the Mary Celeste creaking from the front too

So if your spring is about to go they aint going to replace these? Does the mod stop the damage to springs?

I thought they would at least replace springs as well

TBO I smell a scam it will cost fiat a damn site less by putting in this plate than replacing a set of springs and as far as I'm concerned they need to get to the bottom of the problem regarding the springs braking and not fob us off with a modification (n) I do think there needs to be a modification but IMO I think it needs to be both strut and spring yes I think that the strut SHOULD be a larger diameter at the bottom of the spring seat but I also think that the spring ALSO needs to be a larger diameter as well hense totally redesigning the springs. :chin:

Re: Stilo spring recall

Just wondered has anyone with aftermarket springs/struts (non Fiat) had a spring break?
I know its probably a waste of time, but there a lot of Stilo owners on this forum, could we as a group try to insist on replacement struts/springs.
Is Watchdog still on TV.

I think the proof is already out there. Bravos have an almost identical front suspension and I don't know of ANY Bravo that has suffered front spring failure. Look on the bravo forums. No spring problems

A spring can break for many different reasons

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE
Too brittle material
Lack of elasticity
Fatigue
Over Stressed

OUTSIDE FACTORS
Corrosion attack
Operating in abnormal road conditions

But as Bravo drivers drive the same roads and same conditions as we do then it can only come down to design and manufacture

When I changed the springs on mine I did notice how much longer they were compared to the Eibach's.
I expected them to be a little longer but this was a joke, they were more than twice the length of the eibachs.

Before the change the body roll was a joke, so could the length be a factor in them snapping, too much compression may have lead them to snap?

Thanks.

BUT . . . they did on the Multipla, almost for exactly the same reason.

See here

I'd like a free courtesy car too :)

Does the mod involve taking the sprigs out etc or are they just removing the wheel to do it....sorry not very technical so no idea what the mod actually involves.

would appear mines is in the list, since it starts with 001.

Have to admit though, I wasnt aware of a spring failure issue, but maybe as ive not been reading everything here and that I missed a thread on it.

There have only been a limited number of springs breaking down to environmental factors. So it probably doesnt warrant a change of springs, although our technicians have been told to inspect spring condition...

The solution is to fit this plate for safety. If this plate stops the springs from falling and bursting tyre's IF they snap then it would seem a good precaution...

Alot of cars suffer broken springs(mk1 mondeos for example)and after all springs are under a lot of stress everyday & most garages/factors stock them.....why? because they break/sell well!
However I will admit that quite a few people have suffered broken springs here.

Has anyone made contact with a dealer? or had the modification done yet?

Shooweenick,
Is there a planned start or publication date for this by Fiat?
I've checked the VOSA web site and not updated yet
