Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

I have a question for all.
Is this problem affecting only springs which are under salty roads condition?
What sort of mileage-age are we talking about before springs develop this fault?
Anybody in the London area had this problem? (normally free-salt roads around London)

Thanks

Salt is their way of saying Oh so sorry we cocked up with the design of the stilo suspension we will do our best and give you a bodge instead of saying sorry and sorting the problem out :)

As I stated earlier other manufactuers have had problems with 'the type of grit' used on UK roads.
T14086, can't Fiat come up with some evidence to prove this. All it really needs is a couple of close-ups and some convincing text to go with it.

Have you seen any evidence, to support this, on springs you've replaced ?

I believe this recall to be only for the UK market?
What salt is used on Uk roads?
Can anybody provide details?

Thanks.;)

Came across this on net.......

'It is recognised that chlorides contribute to metal corrosion. Modern vehicle design and consideration of the de-icing activity in designing and building road structures have both helped to reduce the impact of corrosion. The use of corrosion inhibiting additives is now being trialled in the UK, with some success. Vehicles and metal structures exposed to salt should be cleaned down regularly to avoid accumulation of salt'

I can confirm that I have a dutch imported stilo which does not have this recall applicable, therefore it appears that the environmental factors we have mentioned earlier appear to be the cause of the failures.

When I stripped out my struts I can remember putting back a rubber seat under the spring at the base so where's the metal to metal contact to cause corrosion and failure must be the car form of flesh eating disease and particularly loves the taste of the springs  I didnt find one speck of rust on that part of the spring just where it broke

Phil, as we actually have the information, could you explain to the masses why Fiat UK are doing a recall, yet other european countries are not?
Are left hand drive springs different to right hand drive springs?
Is the fact our road signs are in miles and europe is kilometres?

Or could it actually be for the reason that the Fiat techs have been saying?

well as I see it and infact and it seems so do many others now .

Fiat are doing this recall because they cocked up big time and maybe the other countries have a different spec I'm sure you will correct me no doubt if I'm wrong[TBO not interested what they have and only concerned why its happening here]And the difference in left to right hand springs well I asked the same question and got the same springs for both sides so apparently their the same air con cars are not the same though [tip for you ;) ]you actually missed out a question there
Don't you realise Phill they drive on the other side of the road out there :) Answer - Do they really well I never realised thanks for that (y)

Now let me ask you a question have you a degree in engineering have you studied hard and long or have you just taken their word for this being a DET mighty fiat have spoken so it has to be correct (n) motoring companies have made many mistakes over the years and it has cost people their lives lets just hope this doesn't happen to the owner of a stilo the resulting court case could be the death of fiat who would trust them in the future not many I think after that kind of public execution now me I love the stilo and will do what it takes to correct these fault my self and that will include replacement of all struts /springs etc to aftermarket parts if its necessary I have no personal grouch with you you only come on here and help us for which many of us are eternally grateful (y)

PNL signing out have a nice day and think about what I have said just look at it from our perspective please :)

Wow, let's stop this shall we?

Phil, I can understand you are annoyed at the situation but going off on a "this can cause death" rant is hardly appropriate. For whatever reason this recall is being done, it's being done, end of story. This is the kind of fault that would become apparent over a prolonged period, such as the Punto's brake lines. FIAT have held their hands up and are sorting it.

Now, let's all chill!

Yes I would totally agree Rich in fact I actually think this thread should now be closed as I'm sure by now everyone has their opinion on this recall and its up to them to act as they see fit (y)

i dont want start something here ,but the uk gets 70% of its rock slt from ireland .so does the recall cover all of ireland aswell.plus the rest of europe get theres from russian mines . this is just my look on it?

ive got an 02 selespeed arbart its got a creaking noise when you turn the steering wheel, its worse on a cold day but, doesnt go away. recently had new cluth, nearside halfshaft, steering rack, gear select sensor, and timing belt. when will the expense stop??? the car has had £4,350 spent on it in 14mnths,not to mention all the petrol it guzzles.
all wrk done at main dealers who still dont seem to no wot they are doin. any advice or maybe point me in the rite direction if poss. thanks

Noise you have is the top mounts you can spray around up there with a lube or as Argo uses Waxoyl there's a thread on it some where find it and all will be revealed :) 02 car are getting now to that stage when they will be needing some TLC dependant on mileage and how its been treated just like this spring issue that's happening fiat seem to have design faults in many of their cars and if your not happy about the standard spring/strut set up then change them there's many good after market springs/struts out there you can use :)

Recall done to both Stilos, but the inspection they did came up with Front Pads low, Front Discs worn, Rear Pads low - ah well :chin:
