Evenin all, just a quick one......can the service indicator only be reset at a dealers or is it possible to reset it yourself?? Any help is appreciated, thanks
(stilo 1.6 dynamic)

Many independents can reset the counter now. Key thing is to ALWAYS get the garage to agree to reset the counter when the service is done as that way they can hardly charge you extra afterwards.

Even main agents shouldn't charge more than 30 minutes labour ro reset it (in my area that's £32.50 + VAT).

Nationwide Autocentres has just cocked up. Their new software can't reset the service counter after all so they're taking my Stilo to the main agents to have it reset.

It certainly pays to part with the line "..and you will reset the service indicator when you've done the service?". "Certainly Sir!" :D

:chin: Hope my Stilo comes back in one piece.

The SERVICE DUE data is a value held in the body computer which counts down days or mileage until the time has come to trigger the warning. To reset the data held the correct information has to be sent down the CAN lines and a new value data input to the body computer.

This can only be carried out with Examiner (or very similar equipment, not normal diagnostic software) or by using CAN data creating software and inputting the correct raw data down the CAN lines to communicate with the body computer

Confusions happen because a lot of cars have a SERVICE or CHECK ENGINE warning light which triggers when a fault is recorded and is easy to extinguish using readily available diagnostic software. This is why you often get the "Yes we can put out your sevice light sir" followed later by the sheepish phone call "Errr sorry sir but ...."

To find out more about CAN systems and some light reading over breakfast look http://www.kvaser.com/can/protocol/index.htm

Probably better to keep them in ignorance then. The whole point, of course, is once they've said that then they pick up the tab for resetting it and not you (assuming you've already agreed the service cost) :)

I dont believe you went to that bunch of cowboys Argo to have your car serviced Phil's getting you some spanners for Christmas

I can't speak for them all but I'm genuinely impressed with the bunch next to me (literally only 3 minute walk away too).

I need the service book stamped for the 3rd party warranty (y)

UPDATE: Just picked the motor up and counter has now been reset (don't know what that cost them). See, they can't be that bad can they Phil? :)

Buggers by me are (n) I wanted to get my brake fluid changed on the GTI and it was synthetic fluid the service manager said SYNTHETIC fluid whats that  in 25 year of the motor trade I have NEVER heard of that ...jees what a moron

Actually the service info is stored in the instrument cluster, this has to accessed using examiner. When you change the cluster the old data needs to be drawn from the old cluster and programmed into the new one. The mileage is also stored in the engine ecu, but this is just for eobd diagnosis, and police enforcement.

theres the link but it dosent say anything about it working now does it yellowstilo? have you tried this?

Yes it works, tried it on my own Stilo :

All it takes is an investment of around 100 euro's (+/- 69 pounds?) and a group of Stilo owners that is willing to raise 100 euro for the reset formula.
There are a lot of other CAN-commands for the Stilo - I will reveal some of them after I sold the reset-formula.

2 months ago i had a new cluster unit fitted, the fiat dealer managed to transfer the mileage over (after i told them), but the service due message keeps coming up now.

can you move the service info over to a new cluster unit? Fiat are saying no at the moment and can only be reset at a service

Get my interest going :)

Have you got a code to activate the alarm feature of the body computer (if it was disabled during manufacture)

The body computer is programmed at the factory and without the proper hard- and software you can't change the original configuration.
There are some Local Identifiers that could be changed but the bodycomputer will verify this change with it's original configuration and send a negative response if the two settings don't match.
Another problem is the lock on the bodycomputer - you need a pin-code to unlock it (could be the same code as the one on your code card for emergency start procedure ??) I didn't try this yet.

if you want to play around with your bodycomputer (at your own risk !!) you would need the same hard- and software as for service reset.
