Greetings.

I have a 52 plate Abarth and have noticed that it tends to burn a bit of oil. I reckon I have put in around 2/3 of a litre over the last 1500 miles. Is this normal?

Cheers. :)

Out of interest barfly do you drive your car hard and what make and grade and make of oil do you use ?

Good question. I don't drive too hard - just the occasional flurry to clear the cobwebs. Usually I am quite conservative.

The oil was changed by Fiat when I picked up the car. I am topping up with 10/40 Semi-synth (£7.50 per litre from Texaco).

Chill.

Sounds about right for an Abarth. They do like a little tipple.

I read in the manual you have to use a 10/60 W fully sinthetic.

Price seems to high in Britain for oil, do you pay high taxes on oil productos?

Im using 10w-60 Selenia Raicing. Before was using 5w-40 and it was burning 0.5l-1000km.

I've done 2000km in mine and not noticed the level drop at all. But then my Stilo Abarth does seem to be special (touching wood)...

FIAT quote a ridiculously high consumption that will cover all cases.
Actual use might depend on how the car was first run-in, i.e. how vigorously it was driven. If it was driven too gently, the rings may not have sealed very well before the bores glazed. If you drive it properly and use the right grade of oil, it might come right (in my experience of previous cars).

I have heard of a trick that involves pouring ATF into the engine; apparently it helps to un-stick and re-bed the rings... I think that there are various additives you could try that would work in a similar way (probably safer for the catalytic converter too).

I don't think the standard specified oil is 10w60? - see attached pic, 10w40 or 5w30 for really, really cold climates - but thicker oil will reduce oil consumption in most engines. All engines burn oil to some extent, but in my older FIATs (e.g. 128, Uno 60) it was always a tiny amount (i.e. less than 0.5L in 10,000km). Yet the handbooks have always quoted more like 1L/2000km.

Mine uses 1 litre per 1000 miles on average..

I changed the oil after 500 miles to the selenia racing 10w 60 But i found the car sounded too top endy? So thinking that this was a bit thick I put 10w 40 Magnatec in and the noise went straight away..

Still drinks plent of oil though... :(

And at the price of Magnatec and amount of miles I do.. Costs me a fortune!

Cheers for all the responses guys. Serious question then...

Do Abarth owners ever have to perform an oil change? If we are always topping up with new stuff (around a litre per 1500 miles), what would be the point of replacing it all at once?

Selecta.

Acceptable philosophy for a lawnmower, but I think I'll still be changing the oil at the recommended intervals. Don't forget the new oil instantly mixes with the old. Even after you've put in say 10 litres, there is still a significant quantity of original oil mixed with it, all cruddy and broken down.......

I've been using fully synthetic Magnatec 10w40 and I assume it evaporates as I pour it in because this stuff disappears quicker than anything else! What do other owners use?

i use Mobil-1 SuperS 10W40 semi and it goes down at about 400ml/1000miles
since getting engine rebuilt i check oil level once a week and try to keep it around max mark

i was thinking selina oil was rubbish,i think i am using about 3/4 ltr a month and i do 380 miles aweek mostly m/way 80mph,and tootling aromd at the w/end.as being my car has never had anything else but selina i may as well keep on using it,looking at the figures you guys have been getting.

Thanks for the info guys. It would seem that the Selenia oil is good (especially the 10w60 stuff) but isn't it really expensive? I also found online that Agip do an oil that isn't a "high milage" oil but rather an oil specifically for cars that use a lot of oil but I don't know anywhere in the UK that sells that stuff. Anyway today I needed some desperately so got Shell Helix fully synth 10w40 and I will try and keep you posted on the results.
