In one word DONT

Been there done that and... suffered no ill effects and me cats still alive too! Conceed... may be more luck than judgement :p Secondhand coil packs on e-blag for fiver + two quid P&P last Thursday and did contemplate having one for me glovebox :)

change the whole lot cause otherwise youll get pissed off going back and forth for the other three

Hi just changed my spark plugs and while i was doing it i checked the manufacture of the coils SAGEM all four of them,

Does this explain why my car when engine is cold first thing on morning kangaroos and acts strange (nearly cuts out sometimes) but once warmed up drives perfect.

This is the reason ive changed s/plugs but wondering now if its the coils.

Kev

Yes.

- Open bonnet. (y)
- Remove the engine plastic cover (if you have it). 4 bolts or nuts.
- Pull out the plastic clip from the coil.
- Unbolt the bolt that hold the coil in place.
- Pull coil up.

Have a beer (non-alcoholic).

its typical, i read this post last night, and then this morning one of mine goes!
bought one from GSF (who should really be called IGSF) and fitted it in less than 5 mins. it really is easy. and cost me £32. all you need is a 10mm socket.

Two methods.

Sniff them. One smells worse than the other 3.

Elemination by mix and swap. The car will idle "nice" on 3 cylinders and 3 working coils. When you plug in the 4th (faulty) coil it will go rough again.

Method 4..get yourself a code reader cos a code will be logged on the ecu telling you which one has just bitten the dust..sniffing is a good way to tell but you might get funny looks from your neighbours..:p

how do you know which coil has gone as there is 4 off them
Don't forget coils can often introduce intermittent faults (and to make matters worse these often generate false error codes).

Unless it's obvious which coil is faulty then the best technique is this:

  1. Change the 1st coil.
  2. Now drive the car until you're sure the fault is STILL present.
  3. Now change the 2nd (using good coil removed from # 1)
  4. ..
Continue this process until either the fault has disappeared or you've changed all 4 coils (5 on an Abarth). If you've changed the whole set and the fault is still present then you might as well swap the last coil in your hand back with #1 again as then you can put the new coil you started with back in its box.
