My 52 plate JTD makes strange noises under light acceleration especially when cold. Although this is most noticable when the engine is cold it exhibits similar but lesser symptoms when hot. The noise is best described as close to 'pinking' sound you would get from a petrol engine and under the same load conditions but the pinking goes away under heavier acceleration (flooring the pedal). I complained to my Fiat dealer when the car was under warranty but of course they were reluctant to solve the problem unless they could replace a part to charge back to Fiat. I have lived with the problem since and soon after warranty run out I had the ECU remapped for extra HP's but I am sure I am not getting anywhere near the extra 35-40HP claimed by the remapping guys.
Does anyone have any experience of this problem on a JTD or know how it could be solved cause it's now doing my head in.
Any information would be gratefully appreciated...

 Have heard my Jtd making 'pinking' type noises on light throttle, asked a friend who's into tuning cars the other week whether it was possible for a diesel to pink........sometimes sounds like theres some little bells under the bonnet, can't remember what her said now (I've slept since!!!!!!) but as its always done it and it performs well I just thought it was normal.....Have you heard the funny noises Land Rover TD5 engines make???????????

Answering threads in order....

Soon after I had the car the concertina'd hose between the airbox and turbo compressor intake was split so I got Fiat to replace it. I have notice this last few weeks that more oily deposits are collecting in the region of the hose again but I cant as yet find a split in the hose. The material this hose is made from is far too brittle given the movement in that area - should be a rubber hose. Also the pipe arrangement from the compressor to intercooler is at best dodgy, the compressor outlet to rubber pipe always seems under tension - no matter how tight I do up the jubilee clip the pipe works its way off the outlet so it always seems its just hanging on.

The remap was done by CPE, Congleton.

The worrying bit about the 'Pinking' noise is that when the car is cold it is very loud. I am sure this is not normal and the extent of the noise is outside limits from the design of the car. I know that diesels are noisey when cold but this not right. Just wondered if there is any component in the induction that could be at fault?

Just as a quick question, Would it not be possible to replace these "badly thought out pipes/tubes" With some different aftermarket ones??

I will get under the car this weekend to inspect the situation and start to replace those that need it. I have a shed load of rubber pipes for turbos from my renault 5 GTT days that might do the job after a few cuts and hacks. But you are right. Let you know how I get on.

Hi.

On a remaped JTD this is normal... You have more rail pressure and more time injection open, and you have the turbo geometry closer than before(Original ECU Map) to create more pressure. JTD exhaust manifold is not very strong and has you get more EGT's (Exhaust Gas Temperature), normaly on this engines, some exhaust gas will scape from the gap that will apper between the exhaust manifold and the engine head. After some kms, the turbo core will discalibrate and at low pressure will do a noise that mixes with all the other noises. When the engine is cold, this noises seems to be very loud.
My JTD has 180hp, but even when it had 150cv, it do the same creepy noise.

Sorry my bad english, but I hope that my explanation will be perceived .

Hey Dtype, I am new year, and I own JTD 115 MW, I am interested in some tuning, I hear Angeltuning can get 155hp from my engine and 170 with exhaust. Let me know what u did to ur car, how u managed to have 180.
Do u have some acceleration times, it is interesting because nobody is mentioning them.

Thanx
