I've got a 2002 1.6 Active with basic radio cassette.

The reception recently seems to have got much worse and I cant get FM in most areas.

AM and LW seem ok and its a good signal at home but a transmitter is only 5 miles away.

Any ideas

Thanks Rroope and Argo. Never had a car radio before with such poor reception.

Carried out self test , all seemed ok except signal strength best reading was abou 1.5 v , worse 0.

Took the unit out,( you really do need to use a cut up coathanger as other tools too big) and everything connected up tightly at back .

Is the unit faulty or is it the aerial ?

Only way you can really be sure is to test the car with another stereo; the stereo has to be tested in a Stilo as it won't turn on without the CAN line present.

Thanks rroope might try another aerial then see if I can get a Fiat CD /Radio second hand. There are a few similar threads to mine and the HU had to be replaced.

Stilo Radio cassette

My Visteon radio cassette HU has lost FM, AM is still ok. The car is nearly 4 years old.

Signal strength ranges from 0 - 1.3 on FM

Does anyone know if this can be fixed or has anyone got a second hand unit that they want to sell. I would prefer to keep the original if possible.

Re: Stilo Radio cassette

Hey ricardo.

Quick tip; it's better to "bump" up your old threads than start new ones, gives people on here some background :)

As for the stereo, did you try another stereo in the Stilo?? Just to elimate any antenna problems.

Also, if you want, place a "Wanted" ad in the classifieds section (y)

Thanks Roope

I havent got a radio I can try . i'll try a new aerial then if thats no good see if i can replace it .

Trying to fit a new antenna may prove difficult; it involves dropping the roof lining!

If it was a sudden drop in clarity, suspect aerial connection on back of unit also.

Thanks Rich

I tried screwing another aerial in roof mount and there wasnt much difference.

I checked aerial connection at back, cleaned contact and refitted , no difference.

it seems to loose signal over 30 seconds once switched on.

I'll have another fiddle and then price up replacements.

Pretty sure it's stereo in that case then . . . especially if it's ok for the first 30 seconds. I saw there are a few original Stilo CD and MP3 players on ebay; go to "Advanced" search, then select items "Available to United Kingdom".

Thanks Rroope

I've had a look at Halfords and i'll see what's available on ebay

Cool, let us know how you get on.

There is this one for example.

This problem has just happened in my mum's Stilo

Switched it to Radio mode (for the first time in years, always had it on CD changer mode), and the radio was dead! Went into the test menu, signal strength was 0.4v - in the open!!

Took cassette out and put in my old CD player out of my Stilo (before I had the MP3, then the CN+) and it works fine; so the cassette player's radio must be kaputt.

Ah well, another day, another Stilo problem quickly fixed :D

Blimey it must be catching.

I'm getting use to Radio 5 and Virgin on am. Still trying to find a Visteon replacement from a breakers but it sounds as if I'd be better off going for a CD unit

Yeah, good job I kept my old CD player! It has a very intermittent fault but the car hardly gets used so it'll all be ok :D

Can we perhaps talk about the problem a little more, please... ;)
I notice that my 'Seek' tuning (<< and >>) doesn't work (display shows 'Seek', then nothing happens) which makes me think that perhaps all stations are too weak to be seek-tuned. FM Scan, however, does give some stations (goes through the band and stops for a few seconds at each station, so I can store them to the pushbuttons. Quite slow when you want 89.8 and it keeps starting from 90.2 being the 'current' frequency - all the presets are 90.2 for some reason!)

When on the move, the radio sounds slightly 'clipped', as though it's not getting enough of a signal for proper clarity.

The stereo is the Abarth Connect Nav+ unit. Is there anything I can do to check the aerial - does it unscrew from the outside of the roof? Is there an antenna amplifier in the system to check?

Thanks,
-Alex

Just had the same problem with my Stilo. Last week, the Visteon radio/cassette decided to pack up (car is a '52-plate). The tape deck works fine, but the radio reception sounds like the aerial lead has been disconnected. Removed the unit and tested the aerial on another radio, which seems OK. Sometimes the Visteon unit decides to pick up a different station to the one displayed (get Radio 1 on 97.9 but unit is actually on 97.2).

Called the local Fiat dealer who wanted £470 for a replacement radio/cassette!!!!

I'm wondering if this is a design fault with the early Visteon units?
