Hi!
Before i go spending a fortune, i was wondering if anybody has got any ideas.

when accelarating from low revs in second gear (sometimes third), i encounter a slight misfire, for about 2 seconds. Such as accelarating after turning in to a junction.

It doesent occur after a long strech of road (im thinking the battery is quite charged after a long run).

It does happen when in and out of side streets, with little travelling, and alot of gear changes ( im thinking the battery is at its weakest at this point).

I checked the battery health indicator, and its not green. it looks clear, or colourless.

Am i on the right road, or has somebody encountered a similair problem, caused by something completely different to what i suspect?

Any help is greatly appreciated, also after some updated nav/ map disk.;)

Maps; see here.

I may be wrong but a low battery shouldn't affect anything when driving? I had some hesitation that was solved by fitting Bosch Super 4 spark plugs.

I think it could be a number of things start with the basic things check the spark plugs first it could simply be a duff one other possibilities could be a coil on the way out dirty injector or even intermitten sensor fault have you had any warning lights at all ?

the misfire Usually occurs when the AC is on full. perhaps i'll get some plugs first, a bit cheaper i think. although i was quoted over £140 to supply and fit a new battery at fiat. think i'll get the plugs first, and give them a go. maps link not working for me :(

Right, I got the plugs, but Im thinking about replacing the battery at the same time. Fiat quoted £88 + vat to supply. My local motor factors quoted me £33inc vat to supply- same AH Rating, but heavy duty. which battery should i go for? When i disconnect my battery, am i going to have to enter any codes in any one of the hundered computers in the stilo :yum: lol.

If I get the fiat battery, i can order my bose upgrades at the same time tho.

Cheers rroope, link worked, pm sent ;)

Hey anthony

No worries, you should get the maps sorted in no time (y). As for battery, check the warranty with the local motor factors; as long as it's 3 or so years, save yourself £50! Do they know what battery number it is? 065 is standard, 075 is Heavy Duty; make sure it's the right one.

Code wise, you won't have to enter any. Be warned you'll lose Trip computer data and radio audio settings (Bass, Treble, Custom Equalizer settings if you've done them).

Yeah, good move on Bose upgrade :D

Let us know what you decide!

he did say, that the battery is 75ah, and is under warranty for two years. But even if the battery fails after 2 years, its still cheaper to buy 2 batteries in the next four years, than one fiat battery in 3 years.:D

The motor factor battery doesny have a health check display bubble tho' shouldnt really matter tho?

I'll still pop in to fiat to order the bose anyway, im pushing the standard speakers too much, the rear left is flapping something awful.(y)

Any good battery manufacturer will give 3 years (at least). You can usually take it as a sign of how good (or bad (n) ) the battery is. You don’t need the hassle of battery failure on any car and you certainly don't want it on the Stilo.

Pick the best you can buy (y)

looks like i better hand some cash over the fiat counter then. So far (touch wood), I have had no warning lights, ( now im licking the wood coz i dont want any warning lights either ) :yum: :yuck:

Although, i did change the plugs earlier, and so far so good. the plugs that were there looked like original fiat jobs, made by champion for lancia? with 2 electrodes on each plug:confused: are these the originals, or replacement jobs during the last service?

On that note, when i start up my stilo, it sounds like a diesel for a couple of seconds, then it goes back to the normal petrol sound.

I've always assumed that this is the oil flowing through; but i just thought i'd ask! Has anyone else had this problem, and have they resolved it - or is it serious?

Cheers, Rob

I get that for about 1.5 secs, just the tappets making a noise till the oil gets up there. I cured that on a previous car by using fully synthetic Magnatec GTX, and a new oil filter.

Thinking of doing the same with the stilo, or just stick with the servicing. Dont know yet. Unless anybody can recomend another oil, or NOT to use fully synthetic, as I dont know enough about the 2.4 engine yet.

But I only ever get the tapping noise after the car has been parked up for 8 hours or more.

Anybody else get the same?

This noise you are having could well be caused by what is called a variator the 1.8 engine has it fitted and probably the 2.4 as well its what is called variable valve timing if it is this I believe it Can be on the expensive side to put right
