So as stated my car 2002 Stilo Dynamic has failed its MOT on:

1. Rear brake pads need replacing.
2. New handbrake cable required (current one is damaged not sure which one LHS/RHS)

Fiat have quoted me £87.00 all in for handbrake cable and £120.00 for pads and if I get repairs done there they will not charge for re-test! so £207.00.

I have until 1st July to sort out but am away on 26th-28th June so dont have much time.
Should I try myself as parts will cost 15.00 for cable and 27.00 for pads but haven't a clue how to do either.
Can any one tell me if the rear pads are easy to do and will I need any special tools. (I have searched the Forum but couldn't find much) and again same with the brake cable.

Thanks for you opinions or advice

Re: DAMN car has failed its MOT!!!advice needed

rear pads require you to wind the caliper in.there is a thread in the stilo section on this.
brake pads are not an MOT fail really, only on there braking performance.
dont know if a dmaged handbrake cable is a fail, never had one fail that way anyway.
both jobs are not particularly hard but thats down to your spanner handiness

MOT failed

As you may, or may not have read, in the other thread, my Stilo is in the dealership today for its 48k mile service and MOT

They have just phoned me, to say that it has failed :( but nothing major:

1. N/S front cv joint boot is broken - but my extended warranty I purchased has agreed to repair this; they will only pay £45 per hour labour rate, and my garage charges £65 - still, net outlay to me is about £25, so pleased :)

2. Wiper blades - lol - typical, meant to sort this beforehand, but never got round to it. I have a new set [from Aldi] at home, so will drop them off tonight via their letterbox, and they will fit them on tomorrow; they wanted £22 for a new set, so forget that :)

3. Then just a couple of advisories - rear brake pads have about 3k to 4k miles left on them, so will do that within next few months. Plus front tyre wear issues [I was aware of this, having gone to a depot 3 weeks ago, who said they were still legal for 1000 miles] - that is probably down to the way I drive the car, so again not unexpected.

All in all, not bad - I get to keep the Croma M-Jet 150 for another night, and can pick it up tomorrow.

This reminds me, I really ought to put a mileage claim into work - should cover service and 2 new tyres :D

Not too bad Stu . . . my babby was worse than that on its first ever MOT. I've been given the brake pad advisory too, and my tyres are quite low; ah well, soon as I get some money I'll do it :p

Least you get the croma for another day, every cloud . . . :D

Ah yes, they also said my boot release pull had broken off, in the cabin - I remember doing it a few weeks back, forgot all about it....

They want £22 for a new part :O told them to leave it for now.

Pain in the A the drive shaft boot and did you know that its not always necessary to dismantle the shaft to fit one ;) clever little tool they have for stretching the boot over and in theory can take a damn site less than a hour to fit :) Query hear Stu didn't you have a job done to your N/S drive shaft a while back and didn't they fit a new boot then as par for the course ?

I asked that very question, Phil - they looked it up on the system, and it was my O/S that was replaced.

Although I will dig out the invoice tonight to check ;)

Arrrr well just a thought as you could have had them by the short and curlies the only thing that does concern me though is the quality of the fiat part because if the rubber in the boot is the same Quality as the brake pedal rubbers the new ones wont last very long [again just a thought ] :) for the cost it may be worth making a query at Shop 4 to see if theirs are genuine Fiat part :)

The cost is minimal, covered under the warranty I have - the car only needs to last another year [or maybe a bit longer :p] anyway.

I doubt I will be able to find the invoice in time - by the time I get home from work, I will then have to drop the wipers down to the dealership, then I am out at 7.30, to watch the footy and have an Indian with a few guys in the village.

Would you say you got a good return on that 4th year extended warranty and are you going for a 5th?

The warranty I paid for at the time was part of a deal at the Car Supermarket [or whatever it was called] - the price I got them down to included a 2 year warranty, which cut in last July once my 3rd year dealership warranty was up.

I then confirmed within a few days that my dealership would accept it, which they did.

And then a phonecall from them earlier to say that the CV boot is covered, so looks like they have already done the contacting and agreement with the 3rd party warranty people.

I have another year to run on it, which makes me happier :)

I made a very similar deal myself although only for one year. I'm already up £165 (strictly speaking for a part that wasn't faulty) although I suspect this is less than the cost of the warranty :)

I would call that a good result, considering I took my watch for a service Saturday and the charge was £250 or they don't issue a certificate :(

Of course :slayer: the Croma had a range of 130 miles this morning - now having done 60 miles in it, the range is still around the 100 mark ;) although I may drop a fiver in it tomorrow morning :D

I dropped the wipers down - not sure if they will fit, I only bought them cheap after someone posted a thread on here :chin:
