Stilo failed MOT.... shock horror!

But all it needed was an exhaust because after 6 years of Scottish roads the Italian tin decided enough was enough!

Can't be bad really!

Whole exhaust or just the back box?
My 2002 car is still on the original exhaust which is astonishing. I know the back box can't go on much longer though and have a new one here ready to go

Re: Stilo failed MOT.... shock horror!

Entire system, to be honest I'm certain it would have lasted longer had my driving patterns not changed so much over the last year or two. I'm now down to normally only doing 5mile tops each way for work, instead of my previous 25miles which kept the exhaust in tip top condition.

I was actually looking at the exhaust when I put the Claws back on, and I noticed the back box was rotten all the way around at the end and that the front pipe was a lot more brown and crusty than the last time I looked lol.

Garage did a sterling job, I stuck with OEM and it was 139 all in, which included flexi pipe, front pipe and back box, new hangers and fixings for the flexi pipe. Car looks like new underneath!

My little 1.2's going in for its first MOT since I've had it, today. The back box looks rotten but hopefully the rust hasn't gone all the way through the second layer.

Wish me luck!

If its just the backbox then it won't be any more than 59 including labour, well thats what my back box cost with labour anyway. I could have bought the part online for @45 so 14 labour was alright I guess.

Re: Stilo failed MOT.... shock horror!

Yay, passed with just an advisory on the back box!! Not bad for a 7 year old exhaust. The MOT tester said he could hear the flexi blowing as well but it wasn't enough to affect the emissions, so passed it.

Wimp... no pain no gain! Seriously though if you've only had the car 3 years then you won't have paid its worth yet, so if you trade it in your only going to loose even more money.

Why do people fear the MOT so much If it fails its because its not safe for you or other road users/pedestrians.

What amazes me is the amount of people who dont even bother to check lights, yop up washers etc...basic things then they moan when it fails

Re: Stilo failed MOT.... shock horror!

Yeah if you fail to prepare your car then prepare for it to fail I say!

Light, fluids, tires can all be checked, as can seatbelts, seat anchorage, exhaust, brake basic inspection (corrosion, leaks).

Basic structure can be checked at home too, its really only emissions and brake balance you can't check easily yourself.

Although I had a fair idea my exhaust could fail, so it came as no real surprise to me.

I had it since new (53 plate) . Got a trade-in figure last year (1500) so it's not going to lose much now - a few hundred opposed to a few thousand. So we are getting near the point of cost of repairs exceeding value of car.

The very fact it's not depreciating very much is all the more reason to hang on to it. Driving a car of low resale value is actually quite a good idea since you can dispense with comprehensive cover and if you've been saving your pennies then you should be in a position to buy another whenever you want.

Most people make the biggest loss when they commit to buying another car.
