A couple of weeks back my Stilo 1.6 MW was in for second service, and I asked for the aircon to be checked under warranty as it wasn't working ... when I got it back I checked it on my way home and cold air was coming through fine. I didn't have occasion to use the aircon until last week-end ... I was at a meeting with a friend, and the car was stood in the sun for a while ... when we came to leave I naturally switched on the cooling, nothing happened, we made a 20 mile journey home, and never once got cold air through. Monday morning I had a couple of journeys to make and expected to be passing the FIAT dealer, so intended to call in and have things checked out, luckily I tried the aircon beforehand and found it was working fine , I ducked on the call at the dealers ... saved me from looking a right berk. Later I did some temperature checks with a thermometer stuck in the dash airvents, with air from outside and no aircon running, temp showed about + 75°F , with aircon running and recirculating body air temp very quickly dropped to 44°F... very good. Latest is this morning I took my family to town, and dropped them ... aircon working fine on the inward journey, engine was stopped while passengers were dropped, no cold air at all coming through on the way home ... On arrival home I found the compressor not running. Obviously I need to go back to the dealer, but could do with some input ... Ideas anyone ???.

Assuming the air con light comes on when selected, you probably have a small gas leak- the most common of all Aircon faults. Once the pressure goes too low the linear pressure switch will stop the compressor from working to save damage

Get a top up kit with pressure gauge attachment (or just the pressure gauge if you want), from somewhere like Halfords and check your pressure with aircon switched on if the compressor is running. If compressor is having a sulk and not working anyway then just check the pressure. It's the first thing an air con engineer will do.

Have a look here

If the pressure is low then top it up following the how to advice in the videos
Look and listen for leaks at joints

If your pressure is fine then you will need to look elsewhere electrical like the linear pressure switch, connectors, switches, fuses to find why your compressor isn't running

OK Decks,
Thanks for the advice, and the video link ( I bookmarked that one for future reference), but the car still has a couple of months of makers warranty to run, so I'll let the dealer look into the problem. I was just looking for info, not wanting to appear uninformed with the dealer. I've been told that dealers warranty for the third year doesn't cover aircon( not sure if that's true ), need to get it nailed down before that time. Thanks again. (y)
