General Dip Stick/oil level

Ok chaps this may seem a little silly and a bit thick of me but:

Where on the dip stick should the oil level read? Im presuming in between the knurled (textured) flat piece of the dipstick but im not 100% can anyone clear this up for me???????

Textured area is where the oil level must be. Preferably in the upper half.

The reason of having difficulties with reading the oil level might be in not having any oil.a friend of mine had dificulties reading the oil level before going to the service where they told him that the car already wasted the oil.This is dumb an not your question ![8]
