General What fuel economy you guys getting?

glad to see all these quotes of 40-50 MPG.....Thought Id test out the other end of the scale; drove my abarth like a scolded cat yesterday[}:)] and got the grand sum of

17.4MPG !

That was on 127 miles of driving. [?]B)

I do around 40000 miles a year.....at this rate I'll need a 2nd mortgage to afford the £9000 + of petrol costs per annum!!!!!!

Even driving like "miss daisy" I'm gonna clock up in excess of £5000 in fuel adding £1000 to my yearly costs v. my old 3litre Laguna.

Need to find an extra job for 1-3 hours a week to fund the fuel![)][xx(]

If you cover 40000 miles a year why did you buy an Abarth.... are you a Masochist? [:X]

Ah James, thats nothing, did the same thing in my car and checked the insta fuel consumption as i was plodding down hill (in gear, not even in neutral) and i managed 96.5mpg. :p I was trying to see if i could crack 100mpg, but unfortunately i had to turn off the road i was on and then accelerate up hill, 96.5mpg to 39.5mpg just by turning uphill and flooring it! :I

My new average is sitting at 43.5mpg - thats only 1.3mpg off the FIAT quoted combined cycle and that was proper driving, up to 80mph to test the speed warning bleepy/flashy thingy, sitting in traffic for 15 minutes, crawling along some roads.

40k a year at 17.5mpg?
Y not get a diesel, and spec it up like an abarth? It'd still save you a packet.

Stiloboy, the instant reading only seems to go upto 99mpg:(
I remeber years ago, travelling in a Granada, eveytime the guy lifted of, his instant reading shot straight to 99, shows how things have come on. I was in a Calibra the other day, its trip computer seemed little better.

How many miles you put on yours so far Stiloboy?

I've only had the car since Tuesday, but it'll be nocking on 300miles by the time i get home tonight! 50 miles round trip to/from work each day. Used to be 100 miles and that justified the Diesel. 50 miles a day in my opinion doesn't quiet justify a diesel, although i'll soon see how much it costs when i do a big journey.

Getting about 35mpg from mines atm, its only being driven back and forth on a 30 mile round trip and since its my mother driving it as well its probably could do better ;)

Just clocked 1800 miles and the average is 27mpg on my Abarth - I can only see that going down now that its run in!

This is what's on my general trip reading at the moment:

Distance travelled: 2042 mi
Ave speed: 63.7 mph
Ave consumption: 48.7 mpg

car is six months old and done 6200 mi

taking a lot of highway driving the last 2042mi right? the ave speed is too high for city driving!

Well me current average....

Distance travelled 670miles
Average speed - about 35mph (lots of crawling in traffic jams recently)
Average consumption - 41.9mpg

Hmm glad i bought the petrol model now! :p

Just filled up, 51.65 litres, 473 miles covered, 48 miles reserve. Works out roughly to 41mpg in my head. Trip computer says 41.7mpg.

Not bad, considering the amount of sitting in traffic i've done over the past couple of days and driving like a nutter earlier on! :p

I'm pissed off with my 24/25 mpg average, so on my latest full tank I decided to keep the revs below 3000 in every gear and all of the time, guess what, I got 28.7 mpg, that's still crap!

TC i think that the 1.6engine will always be thirsty.its not up to you or your driving its the engine.mine consumes a lot too.

TC, thats ridiculous consumption for a 1.6, I'm glad I didn't go for a petrol, I considered a 1.8, cos on paper its quicker than a JTD, but several people convinced me that modern diesels perform much better than stuff like 0-60times suggest, so I went for it and I'm very happy with performance and economy.

Stiloboy also seems happy with his 1.2, though obviously no where near as quick as a 1.6 or 1.8, the economy would be much easier to live with.

What is strange is that the motoring press consistantly plums for the 1.6 as the best buy in the Stilo range? Maybe it sounds like a good compromise of performance and economy, but you guys seem to be finding otherwise.

Wait til the 140bhp JTD comes out, that car will have it all, stacks of power AND good economy:D

My 1.6 Brava has the same engine as the 1.6 Stilos, and the MPG is very poor. I'm lucky to average 35mpg, usually it's closer to 28mpg. It doesn't seem to matter how hard or gentle I drive, it's still the same. If I'd known about this beforehand I doubt I would have bought the car to be honest.

I filled my 1.1 Uno once a month, I have to fill the Brava once a week. [V]

Yeah when i was looking round at prices i thought of the 1.6 thats why my Saxo was, read loads of press reviews which said 1.6 was best. Then scratched the surface a bit further and found the 1.2 petrol seemed to be the pick of the bunch.

TBH i really would have liked the diesel myself, but the £4000 difference in price would mean years before the fuel economy difference would really be felt in my pocket. [xx(]

I had a brava 1.4 sx before and the economy was absolutely apalling. I seem to be getting abot 33 mpg at the moment which is way off the manufacturers combined average but way better than my Brava.

I get about 29 mpg in my 1.8 turbo Leon Cupra which I think is pretty good.

1.6 Dynmaic 5 door.

James it could be best compromise of performance and econ but one is for sure, its preety damn thirsty, and we are talking about consumption here, right? So we made an agrement, FIAT petrols are very thirsty, but buy them anyway :)))

Stiloboy, you must have got your Stilo very, very cheap if it was £4k less than the 1.9JTD:D

The trouble with the 3door is you can only have a diesel with Dynamic trim, the 5door offers Diesels in all trim levels, plus an 80bhp diesel.

janevj, yeah, fiat petrols are still nice, but all things considered, you might as well go for the Abarth:D

I did get it cheap, mucho cheap, well cheaper than List price, and if i'd wanted a Diesel i'd have had to pay list, so its at least £4k i saved. Only reason i ended up with a petrol and not the diesel TBH! :)

Crazy deals on the 1.2 at the moment, basically because the 1.4 is on the way.

What do you diesel owners pay for road tax? What insurance group is the diesel? FInally, what the service intervals for the diesel?
