re: headlamp leveler motor making a noise?

Mine does this - ever since my n/s light leveller stopped working, so presume it is a short of some description....

I will have a looksie later, and see whether it comes on just with dipped beam.

I doubt it's a short, my levellers still work.

Hmmm, t'is weird - I will have a play later as I said, but the noise is very loud, especially when standing outside the car.....

Even the AA man picked it up when I had a coil pack go.

re: headlamp leveler motor making a noise?

Righto, had a look last night!

Noise happens when on dipped beams - from the front n/s headlamp unit! Also, the light levellers do not work on that side - the o/s unit and levellers work as envisaged.

So what is this noise then? :chin:

re: headlamp leveler motor making a noise?

The problem is in the height adjustment motor in your headlamp.
I had them changed both withing one month, and now the right one (passanger side, but my wheel in on the left side) stopped working again.

The noise was comming out of them, like the adjustment motor is running, but headlight wan't gonna move.

I made an apointment, but with another garage, think they sholud be much better.

Headlight Leveler Motor Fix

Hi, last night when i was driving home people on the opposite side of the road kept flashing me, i found the fault to be my D/S headlight higher than the other one so being me i decided to check out the problem and found the motor on that headlight making a constant noise when on main beam, ive tried taking the bulbs out n looking for traped wires etc but it hasnt resolved it, any ideas would be a great help before i contact wonderfull fiat :D

Re: Driver Side Headlight Motor problem

Yep, seems to be a common problem, although it is the passenger side for me.

Mine still makes a racket with headlights on, but car got through its MOT ok, lol. I think it is a whole new headlamp unit to fix, unless someone says otherwise :p

Re: Driver Side Headlight Motor problem

I spoke to fiat and they said it may need a new headlight adjuster motor £49.80 and its a b**tard to put in apparently, i went on shop4parts.co.uk and a new headlight is about £80 or so

Left headlight alignment motor seized to work a couple of months ago, I said to myself back then "not important, I never use it anyway", but now I need it cause I have to drive my family around and all that during weekends, whereas during the week I drive it to work and back, therefore different adjustments according to load...

From time to time I could hear the motor cranking and spitting and doing some silly sounds; yesterday I decided to play rough so I hit it quite hard and bloody motor started to work again.

I wonder what is wrong with it; if it fails irrevocably I suppose I will have to replace the whole headlight unit...

lights adjusting up and down on their own?

Hey,

Just noticed this the other day, when i travel down girlfriends bumpy driveway and then come to a stop, I could hear a small motor revving up and down, then noticed it was my headlights moving up and down and up and down and then they stopped.... is this normal????

Re: lights adjusting up and down on their own?

I dont normally notice it when driving but the lights are motorised. Think they are on a kind of gyroscope. If you start your car with the lights on, you will see them adjust to the correct position.

Re: lights adjusting up and down on their own?

most likely not; it seems more like a fault in the headlight motor; I have the same happening in my driver's side headlight, which is faulty at the moment as motor keeps turning it (or at least it tries); passenger's side is fine

mind you, the adjustment can only be done via manual push of buttons on the control pannel by the steering wheel

unless, of course, your car has xenon head light units, which makes all above just gibberish, because xenons come with auto-adjustment logic in them

replace headlamp adjustment motor

Hi guys, I don't know if anyone has had to do this yet but my near-side headlamp adjustment motor is permanently on and hence cannot do any adjustment that side (drivers side is fine). From what I can see it's a black box thingy and it's making all the noise and drives some sort of driveshaft to move the lights. I have a new one on order and wondered how easy it is to do since the part is £52 on it's own. My Stilo is booked into dealer for safety recall of corrosion issue and I asked how much to fit new motor whilst they're at it....£150+vat. Told them thank you kindly but I didn't want to bend over and have my pants pulled down! So I gather that you need to remove front bumper but from there anyone no if it'll be easy to replace?

Cheers,
Bennygod

Re: replace headlamp adjustment motor

I haven't had the pleasure of doing this but it is quite a common issue with the stilo .. if you have to access and remove the headlamp at all then yes you will have to remove the front bumper to get at the securing bolts :bang: if only we could remove the headlamps with out removing the bumper it would have made life so much easier to change bulbs as well

Re: replace headlamp adjustment motor

Cheers PNL

I'm fine with removing the bumper/grill to get the light unit out it's just the motor itself. I was hoping that even if nobody has replaced it that someone might know if it is easy to remove or if I need special tools or 3 hands!

Re: Headlights making a whirring noise

No it's not another "how do I change my headlights" thread :p

BUT after changing them, my dipped beams have started making a whirring noise and every couple of seconds a boing kind of noise  I'm assuming they're trying to self level, but not quite getting there?

What did I do wrong? :bang:

I've got the same sound, so I'd be interested with what you find. I think that its the leveling motor either failing or continuously working. Mentioned it a few times to the man at the fiat garage but he hasn't come across it before.

Re: Headlights making a whirring noise

My N/S does the same thing - whenever I have my lights on, a constant buzzing; basically, a failed leveller, just constantly whirring away. I just live with it, got through its MOT just fine
