some of you may remember this link: Lowering The Stilo...

Well, here hangs a little tale:

I got my car 2 weeks ago. 2nd hand & with 21 days warranty. So, I was gonna wait until the warranty had expired until fitting the lowering springs.

I did however have a small problem with the car, in that going round gentle left handers, at anything above 20mph, there was a slight knocking noise/vibration that was REALLY apparent in the passenger foot well, and not quite as bad (but still noticable) via the steering wheel. So I took the car back to the garage, and asked em to have a look. They did, & lo & behold that passenger side spring is cracked!!!(n)

The good news is I explained I was wanting to fit lowering springs and they offered to pay me the cost of them of buying and fitting a new spring, which means i can order my Eibachs today, with a nice personal discount!

Every cloud and all that eh?:slayer:

Well that's great Rob (y) and its nice to know that there ARE some decent garages out there once the job is done and everything is OK post it up cos its always good to give a good garage some praise good luck and all the best of luck with your stilo in the future (y)

yupp, i'm waiting until the 'dust has cleared' and then there will be a name check... it wasn't a FIAT dealership tho.. already has my 1st taste of them this weekend:bang:

Crap, i was meant to do one when fittin my springs, the backs only take like 10 mins to do, the front about 15 mins each roughly
ill see what i can knock together

Yer that would be spot on mate (i really fancy doing mine) a how to guide would be great

Currently a have 16 inch alloy wheels with 205/55/16 tyres, If i dropped 30mm would everything be ok with wheels and tyres as they are

A 30/35mm drop on your wheel/tyre sizes are fine (y)

Has any one a pic of their car thats been dropped by30/35mm and same size wheels/tyres as mine.

Currently i have 16 inch alloy wheels with 205/55/16 tyres

LOL :D mate Super Stroogle is a nick name given to Stuart DemonD for his super efficient way of finding threads and helping people who are useless at computers [LIKE WHAT I AM] :D now to remove the rear springs you will have to get your car up quite high then the suspension will drop  and you should be able to remove the spring on each side the new ones go back in and carefully lower your car down the weight of the car will keep the coil springs in place on its seats [If I'm incorrect someone correct me]as that's how iv done it in the past but as yet haven't done a stilo the only tools you should need is a bar for prising out the old ones and a good set of mussels thats the arm type not the eating type.

Lol Lol, PNL if only id known, been looking everywhere ive seen Stuart DemonD in almost every thread.

So removing these springs mate, do i need a spring compressor, also how high does the car have to be as i only got trolley jack (not sure how high it goes).

Also do i not have to remove any bolts or remove anything at all cos this seems to easy for a novice like me.

Kev

Is it really an easy job to fit new springs?

I'm about to book mine in, and they're on about 220 for parts & fitting on Apex... 30/35 mm drop...

that sound about right?

i know on the clio you have to bugger about with a spring clamp and compress the springs...

Now lets start again Ok:)

Firt of all I take it that we ARE talking about the rear suspension arnt we ?

Are you there Kev ? well I gota go and make tea now but will try and get back later

PNL - Hope the tea was nice.:)

Wll its both the front and back suspension springs i want to change to apex 30-35mm from standard fiat springs.

I understand that obviously ill have to remove the wheel on each side i change.

I take it ill jack car up at both sides using axle stands to support then this is where im stuck.

What next

HOTPOT :yum: right so its front and rear well let me ask you if you have any knowledge of mechanics because if you haven't then I don't think you really should be thinking of doing work on your suspension for you own safety put your car into a garage as you will need a comprehensive tool kit for working on you suspension and associated systems I'm sure you don't want any accidents and I don't want to cause you any so seriously think carefully before you go ahead (y)

Your right i certainly dont want an accident, Many moons ago i replaced a cracked spring in a ford fiesta must have been about 10 may be more years ago, pretty straight forward using spring compressions (if i remember correctly it was on the rear)

I do understand that id have to remove the strut from the car on each side to enable me to compress spring and remove, then replace new sprng onto strut before fixing back into the car.

Am i right in saying the rear two springs will be much easier to change than the front.

Kev

Yes Kev the rears are much easier as I said jack up your car as high as possible and put some axle stands under the chassis members with the wheels off you will see the whole back suspension beam has dropped you may then be able to lever out each spring if not put your trolley jack under the suspension spring your working on and jack up to it then undo the shock at the side of the bottom spring mount and very carefully lower [CAREFULLY] mind you this will give you more space to get the spring out OK now insert the new spring and carefully jack up making sure the spring is in the cups[mounts] top/bottom jack up until you can reattach the shock and tighten up the shock bolt through the eye the other side is a repeat of the first (y) if you don't feel confident DONT DO IT :)

Thanks PNL, What are PI springs like as ive tried to order some apex but they are out of stock and they trying to sell me Pi, they are saying they are better than apex

Well the quality off PI spring was brought up in another thread and Peter [Oldschool] from GSR didnt rate them and knowing peter he wouldnt give them bad rep if they were good :) they apparently loose their tension so you need to think about it before you buy them theres loads of other makes around (y)
