Ah, cunning, must get my hands on this VMWare . . .

Although my plan is to install Win98 on my portable USB HDD, and the examiner software, then get the laptop (whichever one I'm on) to boot up into 98 at the BIOS boot screen. May work, we'll see!

And to think I threw out all my Windows 98 disks, what a fool!

Trust you Rrope!:) Try downloading the file again in case you got a corrupt file

Examiner is working better in 800x600 and working wth mouse now but still graphics not appearing for the selection buttons just numbers in the boxes

I notice certain files are not being installed as it's looking for files like D:/INST/setup.exe which isn't there if you're installing from C: drive so as this is normally a cdrom install I'm gong to try burning the install program onto a CDROM and see if it will install completely from the CDROM without missing any files

Again you're right deckchair, I missed this: you must either install from CD (and run from HDD, but still keep CD in), or use Alcohol to emulate CD with a generated image of the CD, which would sit on HDD as a file.

Are you getting this sort of appearance?
examiner%203.JPG

This is in normal WIN XP as it seems to work the same for me regardless of which operating system
The button names are not appearing like they should. The buttons work but you have to guess what they are Ha!:)

00003 is forward
00007 is return

Ah Now it's starting to look good. The Release program in the CDROM drive seemed to hold the key for inserting the data for diplay on the selection buttons as well as the missing files

Interesting to see it does CAN network, ABS, airbag etc and it does my Bravo as well. Very interesting:)

Screenshot on XP Screen Resolution 1024x768

NOTE
The progam takes over Explorer and puts restrictions on it to remove "Favourites" and puts a blank "about blank" home page up to run the program. They're easily removed with a program like "Hijack This", just look for "restricted permissions" Nos 06 and 09 with a scan using "Hijack This" then you can reinsert your own home page again

Seems to run fine on XP and at higher resolutions than 800 x600.

Are you getting the same "communication board has not been detected" when you start it?

BTW, I suggested Win98 as I was going through autoexec.bat file after installing Examiner on a Win2000 Pro and noticed the typical 98 commands... also Stilatos said he saw 98 on the Examiner during a car check...

"Are you getting the same "communication board has not been detected" when you start it?"

Yes and I haven't worked out just what that means as it shouldn't need anything else to work. I'm guessing "communication board" might mean a modem as originally I had some icons with a picture of the world on it which were "connecting to the internet" type icons and an icon with two telephones connected by a wire so it might be referring to that as a "Communication"

It now looks very similar to many other diagnostic programs I have and when you click on the "Forward" to connect it goes through a connecting and testing cycle and, at the moment anyway, fails like it should as it's not connected to the car

Running the Release program was weird- it ran but then froze and I went off to do something else- when I came back an hour later it said "Installation successful" A pleasant surprise:)

"Communication board" could be something like the Bosch KTS device for the ESItronic package. Though I don't remember seing anything like it outside the examiner HW when servicing my car; still, KTS 650 has one inside, mabe just like the examiner? :(

I think Examiner connects to the web just like Dte and Eper so it looks for a modem

"ATTENZIONE!

Attendere l'aggiornamento della pagina in collegamento
Examiner Web.

Seleziona gli aggiornamenti desiderati e
premi il tasto DOWNLOAD per scaricare i file corrispondenti.

Premi il tasto DISCONNETTI per terminare il collegamento.

Premi il tasto ESCI per terminare l'applicazione. "

Translation to English (well nearly English:) )

"ATTENTION! To use the modernization of the page in connection Examiner Web. It selects the modernizations wishes and you use the key to you DOWNLOAD in order to unload the corresponding rows. You use the key DISCONNECT in order to finish the connection. You use the key EXIT in order to finish the application".

Next thing is to connect it to the car:confused:

Then why does it say, next to the "comm board" message, "Communication with the control units will consequently be impossible"?

Still, there's a chance I might be wrong with this: I was reading the help files, and there is a mention there about a VCI-COMBO card, which apparently is being used only for communicating with newer cars (mine's a 2002) which communicate using the CAN protocol. Or am I wrong?

I browsed some more www.alfaowner.com, and there were 2 threads that actually almost confirmed to me that the actual HW interface between examiner and PC is the big problem; it's the layout of pins and wires and also the logic inside the interface (more ELM-like, controls timing and transmission/reception on its own, instructed by the Examiner software) that are still a big secret to everyone... I'll just wait some more to get some more info from this rarebear guy whose brother is working in a Alfa garage:(

Here's an Examiner with all the attachments.

This tester is used in the workshop for diagnostic work on the above mentioned vehicles. One can test among other things the different ecu's (e.g. engine, transmission, abs, airbag, instrument panel, electrical power steering, more bodycomputer u.s.w.) do active diagnoses , software update by means of flashing, parameters read, service intervals reset, similar measurements of other things with oscilloscope function by means of inserted DVOM map, activate indicators with remote locking , key code and much more besides! With inserted CAN upgrade map for modern vehicles with CAN net. Inserted one floppy -and CDRom disk drive, removable touch screen with cable, connection for printers, key board and color monitor. Many languages to select (naturally also German!) - installed (rel. 5,40) inclusive adapter 230v, battery cable 12v, 3 pin VCI cable, MPX 97 multiplexers to the k-lines, CAN eobd map and cable 16 switch last software-Version polig, DVOM map including test lead, 4 different guides for the Examiner, back up cd's for basic program and the 5,40 releases software. The Examiner is until today in use for my private car and functioned 100%. I'm selling the Examiner because I bought an Examiner Smart .

It's all a bit of detective work but the program is updated by flash which I guess is the "Release" program. the communications board might be the small push button hand unit shown in the photos.

Again, I'm absolutely guessing here

Here you se another Examiner CD for sale
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8041297583&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX
It says it's compatible with all operating systems including WIN XP so that makes running it nice and easy

"Wunderbar" translation, deckchair ;)

From those pictures it seems that for "normal" operations you would need the green OBD connector wire, which is pretty big, imagine what's inside... :( I can't

Danke:)
The green cable looks like the OBD2 to serial connection. The cable is also used for electrical resitance checks and providing the cabling for the oscilloscope so it may have quite a thick electrical shielding.

We can hope:)

Yep Examiner is working on my PC, I've now also got it working on my laptop. I have a Stilo interface so it's just a question of getting the time to connect it up. I also have Service due in 2 days coming up so we shall see if it works and whether it can extinguish the service light!

examiner%202.JPG

It will take a small miracle to work as the Examiner needs to be connected to the battery termnals as well in real life and we just can't do that. Connecting your laptop directly to the car's battery- errr no thanks- but we can see if it will talk to the car ECU and body computer and if it does- then we're in:)

Mscortar, I notice the service light is covered under the section COMFORT 3rd from bottom on the COMFORT list once you've selected it

Installation of Examiner was not easy and I've been recording each step for future reference in case anyone else fancies installing it

Where did you get the Stilo interface from? Any chance of some schematics? :D

And I think the service light is in Instrumentation/Visteon instrument panel; what I have under Comfort, 3rd from bottom is Lear Passenger Seat for your 1.6 16V and Marelli climate control for my 1.9 JTD.
