General Leaky gearbox

Just taken my 02 selespeed abarth into garage today for fixing. Small pool of oil appeared on the drive recently. Leaking from 1 of the gearbox seals apparently. Garage have just rang and need to remove gearbox to find leak!!!!
I think this is going to be expensive? Anyone had any similar problems???

Have to remove the gearbox to find the leak? What's that all about then?
Are you sure they didn't say they had to remove the gearbox to FIX the leak?

Never heard of someone taking on such a massive task just to find out WHERE a leak is coming from. Sounds bonkers

as i stated in 1st post they didnt know where the leak was coming from but had narrowed it down to 2 locations one possibly being the gearbox. that is why they had to remove to check initial thoughts.
as it transpires it is apparently a core plug within the gearbox and is going to set me back a hefty sum to have put right!
