Hi Guys

I have been surfing the internet and checking out the car sales sites, Autotrader, Ebay, the Car Supermarkets, etc and I have noticed that there a loads of Stilos for sale. Now the puzzling thing is that 95% of the cars advertised either by trade or privately have under 10,000 miles on the clocks. This makes me think, do these people know something I don't? We still don't see many on the roads, I've seen two others in my city. Sales figures are low. What's the crack? I love my Stilo, what can others see that I can't? Why is ownership so short lived? Trying to sell one on is a nightmare and I've even heard that some garages won't take them in part exchange!
Have I done the right thing, my brother-in-law said buy Japanese or German don't buy that Italian crap, but I buy cars with my heart not my head. Ramble, ramble, ramble.

Any answers?

I'm sure a lot of it must be down to Fiat dumping pre-registered or fleet cars onto Supermarket forecourts. As for private sales, I guess they must be the genuine ones.

But I’m sure the last round of Stilo price cuts have made a difference to sales as I’ve seen loads more of them, especially the 5 door, and my Stilo is no longer the only one in the car park at work.

Mine still is the only one of 1200, I still feel good when people say, 'whats your car?'

Almost all the cars recently on ebay have been 1.2 5-doors, maybe they are floggin' their cars to buy the 1.4 5-door?

Remember over half a million sales in 2 years says that the market will be flodded soon with cheap Stilo's!

You surely didn't buy a Fiat and expect a good trade in! [xx(]

I plan on keeping my car for 6 or 7 years and running it into the ground rather than expecting it to be worth something in 2 years! :p

I agree, once you've bought one you've gotta stick with it for three years and just consider it nice, cheap motoring.

I think to get best value out of a Stilo (or most Fiat's actually) you need to be in it longer term as Stiloboy says. Unfortunately Stilo residuals are pretty poor. What car? put the 1.6 Dynamc at 41% residual value after 3 years (that's a depreciation hit of £7,600 on the list price!!).

In contrast tne new VW Golf has a retained value of 57% for the 1.6 model.

I very much bought the car to get access to value for money motoring and a good car with bags of kit. We plan to keep ours a few years by which time residuals between marques will have evened out.

You'll find that the piles of low mileage Stilo at supermarketes etc. are ex-daily rental cars.

The giveaway is that they will nearly always have done 12k miles or less. They are defleeted at this mileage so the hire car companies don't have to pay for a first service.....

In the flesh, a dead giveaway is small barcode stickers on the windows - they check them in and out of branches with them.

Still, if they and Fiat want to pay for a huge pile of depreciation and run my car in, then thats fine...

i bought my stilo in may 2003, its a 3dr 1.8 in broom yellow, and to be honest you cant really find any broom yellow stilo's for sale on the net or anywhere, never mind a 1.8, theres hardly any of them, theyre all active models. i paid £7,400 for it then (its an ex demonstrator, it had 3000 miles on the clock when i got it) and even now according to glasses guide its worth £7,225. i know what you all mean though, theres always newspaper articles advertising stilos which are really cheap, but theyre all 5 doors and no offence to 5dr stilo drivers, but its ugly compared to the 3dr.
I plan on copying "stiloboy" and running it into the ground for 6-7 years. I've had problems with my stilo but the bottom line on it is, i wouldnt swap it for any other car in the same price bracket.
Kev.
