So what is the best methods to turbo charge your stilo 2.4 abarth. I emailed some body about this topic and they gave me a extensive list i thought i would share it with you all.

FROM: [email protected]

It is possible to turbocharge and actually it is quite a lot easier to do because you can pinch half the parts you need off a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo as they are the same engine more or less.
It depends what your power objective is with how much it will cost as well.

The best place to speak to is Barbz @ Torque Italia (www.torqueitalia.com) - he has the expertise to do the job.

You can take the following off the 20V Turbo engine

- Intake manifold (the VIS manifold is unsuitable for turbocharging) and plenum chamber
- Exhaust manifold
- Turbocharger (but you will need to clip the turbine wheel as it will overspeed in a 2.4 engine) good for about 270BHP max
- Exhaust downpipe
- Head gasket, head studs
- Turbo camshafts
- Sump with turbo oil feed return
- Injectors (good for up to about 330BHP) and fuel rail possibly

You will need
- Forged pistons if you want more than 220BHP probably. The std pistons are probably ok up to 220BHP, but you will have to run very low boost because of the compression ratio. With the 20VT head gasket you can lower the compression ratio of the engine to about 9.5:1 but that is still quite high for a turbo engine.
- High temp/sodium filled exhaust valves. You might be better fitting a stock 20V Turbo head on instead - they're interchangeable
- Uprated fuel pump. You may need to fit a return feed and swirl pot in-tank as well
- ECU compatible 2.5 or 3 bar map sensor
- SOmeone willing to do an OBDII map for your car
- Intercooler and piping
- Intake filter and induction pipe
- Modified exhaust (to fit onto the exhaust downpipe from the turbo)

You may well need a couple of slimline fans so there is space to fit the turbo off the exhaust manifold

You also need an oil feed for the turbo, so will have to get that from somewhere. Std turbo cars ususally have the block drilled to provide it. You will need to look at what you can do on the gearbox and clutch front whether to go back to a manual setup

You will not have to change the conrods as long as you don't go above about 350BHP.

If you want to do a very mild turbocharging you could probably get away with a lot less stuff, but you would be limited to about 220BHP max for things like injectors, fuel pump etc.

By the way Forza tuning have quite a dubious reputation, so beware.

anybody have any thing to add to this list?

well i emailed the fella he mentioned.

Hi
Your kind of limited on what you can get from a normally aspirated engine. But C&B fast road cams are available for this model and with some head work we may see close to the figure you want.
Or you can be more radical and go Turbo, but must warn you that it'll start getting costly to go that route.
Be very interesting project though with 450bhp.

Unfortunately, it is a 10k conversion.

bummer considering i didnt want to spend that mush that kinda pissed on my chips abit.. so any body whos a stilo veteran willing help me mod a 2.4 stilo into a beast, please stand up, please stand up :)

£3,316 woooh thats alot of spondola's

has any1 else tried some thing simliar without breaking the bank?

thanks for th source. i guess its novitec all the way with fiats then. i used to hear them mentioned alot on puntopower.com

I'd have thought a remap and a supercharger would have the potential to be cheaper and possibly produce almost as much useable grunt?

In theory at least, you wouldn't have to take the engine apart to fit nice shing new pistons..... the 5 cylinder engine is already quite well prepped so the head gasket should take a bit of extra pressure???
Only problem I can see is mounting and getting the drive to a conventional 'blower......

Comments anyone:confused:

im gonna try and find a hayes manual for a stilo and a hayes manual for the coupe, simliar engines, just gotta work out how to D.i.Y. it..

but if any 1 else knows of any souces on the web or can draw pritty pictures.. i'd be greatful, btw have u done any performance enhancements yet on ur stilo (ABZSTILOO)

No mods to my Stilo other than some unwelcome ones inflicted on the bodywork by some daft bint in a Punto last week :( - Anyway, it's a 2.5 yr old JTD anyway so I'll wait until the warranty has expired before "playing"......(y)

If you're determined to go the turbo route then I'd have thought that http://www.l-m.co.uk/home.html would be worth getting in touch with about charge cooling and Fiat/Lancia turbo engines, plus there's always http://www.guy-croft.com and http://www.walkersgarage.co.uk/main.htm who may be able to point you in the right direction?

There's so much information "out there" about the Fiat/Lancia turbo engines (as I'm sure you know essentially the Coupe 5 Cylinder engine and derivatives is the venerable twincam engine with an extra cylinder bunged on the end) that there should be plenty of information around to make your life easier.......

The only real "spy" that I can see is engine mamagement, but then again a 5 cylinder turbo ECU from a coupe with a remap by someone who knows what they're doing.... perhaps this is what you need http://www.emeraldm3d.com/em_m3dk.html???

Good luck :D

chears for the coupe manual.. added to my favourates now.. so guys who thinks that adding coupe parts will work? i mean is there any mechanic's out there?...

i'm gonna try this myself see..

so my budget is gonna be around £500 without the remap,

i'm gonna try and get the parts from salvage yards... i know i'm not coming across as flush, but spending over £3k on mods seems abit daft.. call me a tight welsh bastard if you like but.. thats just the way i am..

so guys lets under go a fesiablity study of the proposed idea's..

who thinks this can be done :)

Can it be done – yes, I think so (y) But without being needlessly negative I doubt if £500 will be sufficient budget :( Is that £500 development budget after you’ve got a Turbo engine and all the bits to work from or is it “all in”?

There’s sufficient commonality across the Fiat/Lancia 5 cylinder engine range to suggest that getting the bits needed shouldn’t prove too hard but the practicalities of the installation will be the hardest thing (after engine re-mapping, but we’ve been there).

As a keen dabbler myself :D (before the wife banned me (n) ) on the venerable Fiat/Lancia twin cam engine, I’d suggest that unexpected expense is always the thing that catches the amateur out :bang:
Presuming you want the engine to last a while, you could easily see £500 disappear in reconditioning of secondhand parts even before you start engine building.

I really don’t want to seem negative, I just don’t want to see you ending up like I did on a similar project a few years ago – everything in place but no money left to finish the job. That’s more than frustrating, it’s enough to put you over the edge a little……
Anyway, I wish you the very best of luck. If I can turn up bits (you’d be amazed at what turns up locally and cheaply) I’d be delighted to assist in the cause.

So has anyone done it yet. Seems a lot of waffle about options but has anyone got a turbocharged 2.4 Stilo out there?????

If not watch this space I think I may the mad enough to do it. See what Celtic Tuning come up with thi week and I'll see you at the track.(y)
