Woohoo. After feeling left out from all these tales of front suspension problems I've finally got a broken spring(y)

It came to pieces when I was driving and a fairly large chunk of spring came off and rattled around the wheelarch:eek:
Fortunately I was only doing 20mph at the time.

Anyway should the springs be replaced in pairs or is it ok to just replace the one as I suspect this is what the dealer will do.

Also the car has had a 'wobble' recently - like tramlining except it does it on straight, smooth roads - and I suspected this may be track rod ends or somesuch.
Could it have been a symptom of the spring being broken?

Can we ask everyone who experiences broken suspension springs to make sure that their dealer files a report to Fiat then they might recognise the recurring pattern of a Stilo suspension spring manufacturing problem. A dealer might see one here and there but throughout the country, as evident from this forum, the signs seem clear enough that there is a problem.

Who knows they may have already compiled a bulletin.

Any Fiat techies on line know?

Well the latest from my beloved friends at Arnold Clark in Perth  is that the spring and the shock are covered by warranty.
I have a feeling they're only going to replace 1 shock though which may be a concern as I was always advised to do it in pairs.

Yes two it should be dont give in point out the safety aspect to them theyknow that fitting will cause a slight imbalance and could cause handleing problems

Well I've just spoken to the service manager and he is adamant that there is no need to replace the other front strut as it is perfectly fine. It's just done 48,000 miles more than the new one:mad:

TBH I'm not going to push it as I would've agreed with them if they said it was a consumable. I'll just replace it myself when I get the car back.

I need to replace both my front springs and dont really want the original fiat ones again ( they seem to break on everyone ), neither do I want to lower the car. Can anyone point me to straight replacement springs that arent fiat ones. Thanks for the help.!

Broken front spring on suspension

I've had the same driver's side broken spring problem on my stilo 1.2 five door. It has only done 23k miles and both front coil springs were replaced as was the driver's tyre and shock absorber. The car was technically out of warranty by ten months but fiat have offered to pay the labour and parts :) excluding the shocker and some other small items:mad: . Anyone else have same situation with offers from fiat uk?

Hell thats a turn around from the usual Fiat customer relations id grab it mate (y)

(y) After another letter of complaint to them, I have now been told by Fiat that they will reimburse me for the full amount of the repair. :) It amounts to about £348 and includes all labour, parts, etc. However I'm still out of pocket by about £90  because of breakdown charges and travel back home. If anyone has any further comments, let me know before I make the decision about accepting what's on offer.

I take pride in the fact my passenger side front spring broke yonks ago. You guys are way behind. You haven't even worn out your alternator bearings, or had the gear turret replaced...

What's a gear turret?

Pass. It's described as "Gear selector turret". It was impossible to change gear, especially changing horizontally, and it didn't feel like there was any positive guide from gear to gear. Imagine putting metal filings, and shards of metal in to a bearing... Regardless it cost £82 to replace. Probably some other cheap bit of plastic junk like the heater matrix.

I will do better than asking the dealer to report my second broken coil spring in 3.5 years of owning a Stilo. They obviously have a major problem which could cause someone to be killed if this breaks at high speed. I will be writing to Fiat UK about this matter and reminding them of their legal responsibility to customers safety.

I wouldnt waste you breath I went through the process of logging a claim and the dealer doing the work only for Fiat uk to change their mind and then refuse to compensate me AND the dealer for the work :tosser:
