Six weeks into my three month recouperation I thought I would put my time to good use. All change with the boot-build but what do you think about the fascia tray, like it, not like it? The nano just slides straight into the Pioneer Ipod adaptor. Amazing what you can do with a bit of MDF and a couple of hours.

so can you change songs with the headunit or do you have to use the ipod? if you can then i think i am going to follow in your footsteps with that one (y)

Headunit, as long as the Pioneer has a P in front of the model it's all driven by the head unit. The carpet eases the sliding action of the Ipod and because the MDF panel is made of two halfs you can separate them without having to take the carpet off. A solid panel would not allow the easy install/removal of the adaptor connector.

Some step by step pictures at www.bozzy.f2s.com

If enough interest I will put some instructions/measurements up later.

I called Car audio direct on Saturday to cost that up (avic-x1r) and with the adaptor it was £1100, why was yours so much, got some add ons?

iirc i actually paid £1200 inc fitting and a speed pulse sensor/adapter that was need to tap into the speed pulse. the other price is what they wanted. :D but didnt get the ipod adapter. i was thinking about getting and connecting the nano so i could keep the satnav dvd in all the time. but didnt want to bother if i had to change songs with the ipod itself.

Bozzy, damn genious Idea that. Not sure how it'd work for my ipod photo, but it'd be worth a look into...

Thanks for that, makes no odds which Ipod you have, method is the same. Channel out the shape and put a flat piece on top.

well my girlfriend is getting a nano for xmas and im looking to get one too, so i will be studying your pics in great detail and doing the same. (please dont patent it :D )

if you stick up a 'how to' then im sure some rep will be sent your way ;)

edit: forgot to say i already have the same facia surround :D

Just a thought about it bozzy, how do you disconnect the Ipod? cos it has those buttons in the sides to stop it from accidentally disconnecting..

do you have to pull the ipod right out, and then disconnect it?

No, when I channelled out the MDF recess for the connector I made sure it was domed so the connector buttons were sandwiched in all the time. If you dont get that bit right you could put a cable tie around the connector to keep the buttons in.

The channel for the ipod must be a tight fit for it to marry up with the connector.

I will get around to doing the step by step asap.

ahh, so the buttons are constantly depressed.. I thought it would be, but it was always worth checking. I'm gona give this a go this week I think.

off work so I've got a bit of spare time, and a truck load of spare MDF. :)

Be sure to use 12mm MDF. Perfect fit when together. When you cut off the back of the fascia tray you may as well go deeper than my picture shows. It was a bit stiffer to get in as a result of not taking enough off.

As for the carpet, I have seen some stick on materials that would look as good. Some carbon fibre look stuff springs to mind but the choice is down to the individual. Let us see how you get on eh? I aint going anywhere for another six weeks so will be here to help if needed.

how easy you think it would be to cover the whole facia in the same kind of material as the rest of the dash?

this might sound a bit daft, but how the hell do I get that fascia out?

I've removed my sterereo... but alas i can't quite get the fascia to come out... am i missing something?
