Has anyone ever changed the engine crankshaft oil seal (on a 115bhp JTD) - the one at the flywheel end, not the one at the cam-belt pulley end?

I'm assembling all the bits I need, in order to replace the dual-mass flywheel - and the rest of the clutch/slave as a consequence. Unless my oil seal is immaculate (206,000 miles original factory Fiat item, so possibly not...) now looks like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, if there's a low likelihood of everything turning ginger.

It looks like the seal just passes over the input shaft.. so it's a case of "threading it on" and bolting it down, rather than pressing it into a small recess (as driveshaft seals.. which always turn into a ball-ache, for me.. :D ).

Is it that simple, or is there some tricky gotcha/that wrecks the gasket so you need to buy two..?

Hi Ralf

If it is more or less the same as the 2.4, then it is very easy and quick to do.
Clean surface and just slide over crankshaft.
Gasket unit is a steel plate with the seal as part of it.
7 bolts ( 5 bolt onto block & 2 downwards onto sump.

If I remember correctly the bottom don't have a seal on the sump side, so I uses my preferred silcon gasket maker.
I also used locktite on the bolts.
Think also the bolts go through the block to the oil side, so double check and silicon those threads rather.

That's what I was expecting/hoping for, looking at the seal. Your pictures looks very similar to the JTD... it may even use the identical part.

I didn't know it sat on top of the sump... but that part doesn't sound too bad (I'll have to make sure my silicone sealant hasn't all dried up) and that's a good tip about the bolts possibly also needing sealing, if they're open ended into the crankcase.

The first time I changed the water pump I didn't notice the same thing there and I had to dismantle the cam-belt again to re-do it.. that's not something that I really want to do with the gearbox.. :D
