hey everyone, recently ive been looking for a new fun hatchback to drive on the daily. so while i was browsing the interwebs, i noticed there was a 2005 Fiat stilo abarth for sale just a km from where i live. it has run about 165xxx km.

so i took it out for a test drive, and everything seemed to be alright, except for the airbag warning light, and another message saying something about conslt. handbk. the car is dutch, and im presuming handbk stands for handbak, which basicly translates to manual stickshift. so im guessing it has something to do with the selespeed.

while driving the selespeed was a bit jerky but nothing to crazy id say, seeing what ive read online. but then again, ive never owned a selespeed car.

i know the stilo abarth has its electronical gremlins and im no stranger to diy maintenance, but i wanna know if that selespeed is gonna hold up or not.

it doesnt have any maintenance history either which does concern me a little bit. so what should i do here?

HI, I'm stilo abarth owner, honestly I wouldn't recommend buying it, each month you will face with new issues that no one can give you the right answer where are they coming from, starting from common selespeed issues, followed by electrical issues that are very common and so on, I'm looking desperately to sell mine but until now I can't find anyone interested.

It is very simple

DO NOT BUY

That car or any used car with selespeed , dualogic , duologic gearbox.

Same here, I got one 105000km selespeed from 2001 and I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Fuel economy is **** vs power (I used to have a 3.5L 350Z manual 280BHP, same consumption lol ?)
Selespeed problemsss
Engine oil consumption
Airbag light need a seat sensor simulator
Rear axle bushing
Climate control actuators ...

I got it free @70 000km and I have a "real" car when I need it.

Nothing better or worse about a Stilo Abarth then any other similar car :D

However, that applies to the Manual versions, the Selespeed's are apparently best left well alone :D

I would say it is too risky to buy one with issues now, they are starting to get pretty long in the tooth and parts are getting harder to obtain too..

If you going to buy stilo with selespeed gearbox than you must love it or not. Lots of people are scared of selespeed because they don't used to deal with it. Major problem is maintance. If you love your car and service as it is written on your service book than your car will be fine. Most of that cars are not serviced as they should. Selespeed needs more than that but not to much. If you check complete electric system and contacts, use good battery, service all servicable parts, replace fluids, check selespeed acumulator, actuator and valves, replace selespeed oil and replace brushes on selespeed pump than you will have no more troubles than any other car. My abarth was in not good condition but I start to service all of that and after all my car start to be more reliable and never left me on the road. If you have garage than you car will be in much better shape. Sun and moisture are killing cars. Airbag failure is simple to fix. You need to buy small electronic box and connect instead of your passenger seat sensor. All another airbags connectors need to checked or soldered because original connectors are bad. Whole car needs to be checked and fixed electricaly. When I do that than my electric gremlins are gone forever. If you like that car, if you have monay to service it than you buy it. I sold my abarth and buy alfa 159 but I think that I will buy abarth again just because I like it
