As the 1.2 was discontinued in place of the 1.4 i think 1.4 stilos could be in my price range next year :D

Basically i am wondering if the 1.4 engine was completely re-designed, and was not a modified bravo/a engine, as is well documented, was a problem engine for fiat. Does anyone know if it is completely new design and if not, have the problems been cured?

Also what is the MPG like on the 1.4, around 40mpg would suffice for me :)

Regards (y)

Got this off the Fiat website:

1.4 16v
The new, lightweight 1.4-litre 95bhp 16 valve petrol engine coupled to the standard 6-speed gearbox is exceptionally efficient, delivering 43.4 mpg on the combined cycle and achieving up to 112 mph. With Drive by Wire technology, this engine achieves Euro 4 exhaust emission levels.

Is it not just a slightly enlarged 1.2? Yeah 45-ish mpg should be achievable with that engine. If you don't spank it too often.

It's an evolved 1,2 (i think they did some more too it, than just enlarge it).

And, as stuart says, it still has the 6-speed gearbox in the stilo.

Ahh good to hear its not the problem 1.4 engine in the bravo/a

Thanks everyone (y)

Tis a good engine, have it in my Punto, you don't get much power in low revs which i guess is good for economy, but get it to 3000 rpm + and it shows it's full potential. Loves being revved, and sounds rather good too :D You're right in saying it's an evolved 1.2 Fire engine, and they did a bit more work to it, not sure what though, probably something beyond my technical understanding

I dont have any issues with the 1.2

all the power losses are compensated for by the gear box

car is currently getting about 44MPG at moment.

about to do big trip today so will post figures for that later.

I cant see there being much difference between the 1.2 & 1.4.

Infact, with the Bravo/a wasnt the 1.2 quicker?

I had an Idea for a day or so and it had the 1.4 engine, can't say if felt much quicker than the 1.2. And it only has a 5-speed box, and the Idea can't weight much different than the 1.2 Stilo. With a 5 speed it sounded a bit rough, but then it was a courtesy car. I'm only getting 42.5 from mine, mind you i've been driving like i stole it recently. Mind you a fresh tank in the car today, try to be good boy again.

The Idea is hampered by the aerodynamics of a brick; it's the drag that makes it feel slow.

Thus missing the whole point of the comments further up the thread :bang:

The 1.4 12v 80bhp engine in the Bravo/a was replaced by the 1.2 16v 80bhp engine. The latter was lighter, more free-revving and had a much more complex 'head'. The former was a bit of a pup...

The 1.2 16v 80bhp in the Stilo has been replaced with a 1.4 16v 95bhp version of the same basic engine (but with more advanced technoclogy) that has also been uprated for Euro 4 compliance (required as of 1st Jan 2006) which the 1.2 16v would not acheive.

As much as I think the 1.2 16v is a 'sweet-spot' in the Stilo range, the 1.4 16v is much more of a beast (y)

Nothing wrong with the 1.2 at all, however by the time i require one, a 1.4 will be in my price range i believe and im more likely to get a lower mileage example in 1.4 guise. Extra 15bhp and maybe slightly less fuel consumption but certainly adequate swing it for me also. Plus stilo bugs, niggles etc were apparently eradicated in the 1.4 which was present in the 1.2 so ive read on the forum. Dont know how true this is :)

Never thought aerodynamics would have much impact off the line? When up to speed to Idea felt not too bad actually, just a bit raucus, but then the Stilo is such a hushed car it was probably down to soundproofing.

Never realised 1.4 has 95bhp, i thought it was 90bhp. Well remember the 1.2 can be mapped up to @88bhp. Ah nuts i thought the 1.2 was one of the few Euro IV engines in the line up.

I'm gonna have to do less driving and enjoying my car, and more swotting up again! ;)

Never realised you could remap the 1.2 Is that via angel tuning?

As for mpg on the 1.2 on my long run, I didnt do more than 15 miles before getting pulled over by the law- thus needing to cancel my day trip with mrs to the lakes and get car sorted.

My first week off work for months and on the first day get pulled in by the law and spent 2 days trying to sort it and tomorrow is when the work gets done.

Holiday- ruined.
