Hello,

I was solving this issue
https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/474791-limp-throttle-when-engine-warm-p1220.html
and seem to have found the culprit. The car doesn't have that issue now (kind of).

But since the cleaning, the engine began to just shuts off randomly. (Both on high speeds or when driving slowly or even at a stop).

There is no pattern here. And no error code. I just get the issue say; once in day or once in two days.

And when the issue starts, some times it occurs only once and stops occurring, other times it wouldn't stop shutting off till I get to my destination.

The only pattern I noticed is that when the engine shuts off it wouldn't start back no matter how much I crank the engine.

I must either remove the key from the ignition OR some times remove the key, open the door, close the door before the car starts up.

To me, this seems like the procedures to deactivate an immobilizer but I don't have an immobilizer installed. (Used to have one but it has been removed about 2yrs ago)

Any ideas on what might be causing the engine shut off?

Bearing in mind all the problems you've had with idling and cutting out, I'd have a long look at the Throttle Position Sensor. It keeps coming up in my suggestions to you about each different little problem you're having.

Another cause of "cutting out then won't start" (especially when the engine is *hot*) could be the TDC (aka Camshaft) sensor.. but that's less likely while you have an idle problem. TDC sensors would just make your car cut out completely at random.. otherwise the car runs fine, both before it fails and after it recovers.

Ok. I'll just get a new throttle body and see if this fixed the issue.

Was hoping not to buy any more stuff.

Thanks so much

Its almost certainly your crank position sensor. Or at least the wiring to it. The sensor itself is very simple and either works or fails forever. Intermittent problem is largely due to wiring.

Check both ends of wire ( at sensor connection and ecu) and check for any resistance. Sometimes they become frayed at a junction at top of engine, to the right as you look at it.

Also make sure you have a very good earth from engine block (especially from timing end) to chassis and battery. Run new earth points to be sure.

I have my Stilo now for 4 years with only very occasional refusal to start, but it never cuts out ( it used to!)

Yep! Crank sensor. Little devil.
Doesn't make sense though. If this device is so important to the sound working of the car then FIAT should have added an error message for it on the dashboard screen along the other error messages that show.
