Hello!
Has anyone had a problem like i did:

My car stilo 1.8 with 5000 km, sometimes does not want to start!!
It happend three times when car was left over night. I had to retry about 15 times then it started and it was ok.

But now it happend during driving; it just lost rpm and power and came to complete stop of engine !!! After cca. 15 restarts it came back alive.

What is this? I phoned my service and they do not have a clue, yet.

And aslo I have a lot of moist in my trunk - bottom upholstery is definitly wet - is that normal for stilo?

What about my big petrol consumtion? Normal driving takes 11 litres per 100 km. is that normal?

Please comment on this matter. THXB)

Hi tomideli

Sorry to hear about your problems! I'd think that the starting and running problem is definitely a problem with the body computer / injection unit. If Fiat used their examiner on it they might find errors, or some parameters might need changing.

As for the wet carpet, THATS DEFINITELY NOT RIGHT, you've got a water leak from somewhere. Check your sunroof escape tubes (if you've got one) are not blocked or damaged. Also check to see if your rear lenses are leaking water, or if it's coming from inside the actual tailgate (i've heard the outer handle on them is prone to leaking water).

Hope some of this helps + please write back with your findings / progress.

Hi Tomideli.
Tell your dealer to check the fuses if the examiner doesn't show the problem. There is a chance a fuse has moved or has a lot of dust on. I had a "Low oil pressure" problem and my dealer said that one of the fuses (that are extreme vital to the car) was dusted. Hope i helped and hope it's a minor and fixable problem.

Just a thought - the engine problem sounds very much like a problem I had a few months back.

It could be a problem with the throttle body - all electronically controlled - when you try to start the engine the electronics try to open the throttle but it had none of it, and then worked after a few atempts

I also eventually got a "Engine fault" message on the screen (imagine the thoughts running through my head at the time!!) - about 10 minutes later my engine decided to stick at 1,500 RPM when pulling out of a junction, and eventually came to a halt of it's own accord. By turning off the ignition, and then restarting the engine, the problem went and then returned after a couple of minutes.

The throttle body had to be replaced - under warranty thankfully as the part was over £500!

Hope this could at least be something to suggest to the mechanics . . . .

Hi tomideli

Thanks for the Happy Birthday notice! 18 tomorrow!!!!

Stilo7's right - I was told about a Throttle Body Fault when I bought my Stilo. Apparantly it only affected 1.6 models made in late 2001/early 2002 (mine was PRODUCED on 04/2002 and it has the modified unit). It could be that there were also a few defective 1.8 models, but from what you've said, and what Chris (my parts manager) told me, the faults sound very similar.

How did you get in with the water ingress? I had that in my Brava and it made the boot insulation carpet all mouldy. :(

Ok, my car is at the service, they are checking all my probs:
- not starting and stoping engine by itself sometimes
- wet trunk
- hi consumption : this one i dont know - 11 l/100km???
- version of software

they will mail their findings to Italy and after reply from fiat cca. one week they can do something on my car. I have international warranty and they say that before doing anything they must receive ok from fiat to work on car with this warranty. I bought it from fiat france but i live in Slovenia (i imported it myself)

Does anyone know anything about this strange procedures? I guess it does not matter that my car was bought new damaged by hail storm and i do not have garanties on painted surfaces.

THX for comments.|)

Hi Tomideli

I don't know about your engine stop problem, but the fuel consumption on these cars is very poor indeed, I get about 27mpg around the town and about 32mpg on a motorway run, it's terrible really for a 1.6 engine, so your 1.8 doesn't sound much worse than this.

Nice to see more members from further afield, hope you enjoy the forums mate!

Cheers

I got my 1.8 Stilo new and now, after 7 weeks and 7000 kms, I have an average consumption of 7.4 lt/100 km. I mainly drive outside the city so if you drive inside a city then you are expected to have higher that this consumption. However 11 lts sounds a bit much. Unless you have the Abarth :)

What does all this lt/100km stuff mean in old money? I can't tell if people are getting bad consumption or not!!

Also, I have noticed that the computer is a bit pesamistic about the consumption. It says about 27-28mpg for my Abarth on an average tank but if you work out how many miles against how much to fill up it's actually more like 29-30mpg. Anyone else noticed this?

It's funny that UK and continent do things always on the opposite way :). Over there you meaure consumption by counting how many miles you do with a galon. In the rest of Europe (should I say in continental Europe? :p) we measure consumption by calculating how many litres of petrol we spend per 100 kilometers. Well, to help you with your calculations I could say that: 1 gallon = 4.546 09 litres and 1 mile = 1760 yards = 1.61 km.

I calculated the consumption by myself and I found out that what the computer of the car gives was pretty similar to the one I calculated...

Fuel Consumption

Huh, it's a joke, I just travelled 109 miles in my 1.6 Stilo, it returned 24.3 MPG according to the computer, it was brimmed before I left, so I brimmed it when I got back, it cost me £18.50, shocking fuel consumption or what?

Twincamms.

You must have a heavy right foot. I don't get below 26-27 in my Abarth...

I have a 1.6 Dynamic, 3Dr. I usually get around 32 mpg according to the dashboard computer. I have checked this by calculation and it usually works out near enough right.
