Usually when I brake the pedal has a small amount of 'slop' and then the brakes come on progressively. However occasionally when I first brake the pedal is solid but if I ease off then brake again it goes back to normal.

I remember a discussion about this a while ago but can't find the thread.
I think it related to a vacuum pipe?

As the car is going in for a service in a month or so I want to be able to tell the Fiat tech exactly what to look for as last time I mentioned it they couldn't find anything wrong.

As a 'bribe' :D to T14086 here's a nice picture

I started the original thread. It's taken over a year to get a result! After being allowed to talk with the technician himself rather than relaying messages via the front desk the decision was that the ABS/ECU unit was at fault. (Valves sticking/moving when they shouldn't). Visit from Fiat rep and the ABS unit is scheduled for change.

Annoying part is that when picking up the car after the visit of the Fiat rep I was told that this was a common problem and that there was technical bulletin available that describes the problem and it's not a new bulletin. I believe the bulletin was released early this year, though I don't know for certain as I was not allowed to see it, indeed told it was not for my eyes.

Chase the dealer to get something done, it gets worse. They won't believe you and you'll end up giving the car to them for endless test drives. I've had mine go when I've been braking for a junction and ended up over the line. Eventually the ABS will come on even with just firm braking. Do you get the symptom of the pedal going down when you are waiting, at say lights, sometimes with the feel of a click as the pedal drops a couple of cms?

I'm in 3rd year and they did try the "Out of Warranty" gambit.

Perhaps they'll fix the tyre wear problem next! (Otherwise the car is going to be rejected).
