General New Stilo Owner

Hi All,

I think I've got the Fiat bug as of today I am now the proud owner of an 05 plate JTD 115 Sporting in Broom Yellow (to go with my 1.4 16v Fiat Idea). Few little niggles to sort out on it, 92K miles, but for £400 and the cambelts been done 7k ago then I wasn't going to moan.

Few problems to sort out first:

1. Water in Spare Wheel Well.
2. RHS Running Light Fault (only bulb not working is the passenger indicator ?)
3. Side skirts need attaching properly.
4. Brake Pads need changing.
5. Slight Rust spots on Tailgate, need rubbing down and painting with Galv paint then touch up.

Gave it good run down the motorway on the way home and cleared out all the soot from the exhaust (sorry to anyone who was behind me today) ... lmao

Pic's to follow.

Im curious for the photo's and glad that another Stilo gets a new chance.

Is the ECU already replaced or still attached on the motor? It is best to replace the ecu to a different location or you will get problems on the long term.
The Stilo's are great cars but are very sensitive to electronical problems.

The ECU is mounted behind the right hand side headlamp on the JTD so it doesn't suffer heat soak like the 1.6.

The main thing with the beast will be emissions, since this is 2018 and the car was built in the 19th Century. I would remove the inlet manifold a week or two before the MOT and clean out all the soot and oil you will find in there. There's a MAP sensor on the back which can get gummed up too.

To help keep it clean you can blank off the EGR valve... but I'd do that after the MOT since it recycles some of the exhaust gas so it must reduce CO to some extent. The beast probably has to hit 1.34 now, with the new regulations. Mine managed 1.46 last year (with EGR blanked) so you can see what lies ahead.

Run the oil level at just 3/4 full. The system check computer will tell you if it gets low.. but if it's at MAX or nearly full, you will get oil blown out of the crankcase breather and it ends up in the inlet manifold (which you just spent hours cleaning ^^ ).

Water in the boot is probably a leaky rear light seal. There's three 10mm nuts holding each one in... so pop off the one that looks dirtiest inside and have a look. There's a foam rubber gasket which might need a bit of silicone to help it seal now... or the bolts could just be loose.. (but don't over-tighten them - the plastic is a bit brittle now).

If the contacts are rusty (water getting in) then clean them up too otherwise the bulbs will come on when they shouldn't. The "rear light" bulb is a dual circuit 5W21 (rear light and stop light combined). The holder should only allow you to fit it in one way... but it's only rough stamped, so it's sometimes possible to put the bulb in back to front. You get a very bright rear light and a weedy brake light.. so check it's okay before you re-assemble it.

The brake pads are easy but if it's the rear pads, when you wind in the caliper pistons remember/note that one of them winds in anti-clockwise. If you wind it in the wrong way you'll break it. I can't remember which one it is... but search on here and you'll find it.

After I've sorted out the little niggles, was going to clean out the EGR and fit the Fiat reducing plate in the EGR. Doesn't block it off completely but reduces what get through. Official Bosch addition to reduce the hesitant spot somewhere in the rev range. Will also do a Terraclean a month before the MOT, change Oil, filters etc etc etc. then see how it goes.

Good idea with the EGR plate. I think the holes provide some extra swirl and pressure to the exhaust gas as it comes through, so that it doesn't just loiter in the EGR and gum it up.

Good call with the Terraclean doodah too. I forgot I was going to look into it before my appointment with Dr Death, the MOT man (December) which I'm slightly worried about.

I also tried some of that Cataclean goo in the tank earlier this year and it *seemed* to make a difference.. so I think I'll probably invest in some just before the appointment with The Doctor. :D
