I'm mid-way through assembling the parts I need to build all-brand-new pair of front dampers for Gerrard (1.9 JTD). Just (any brand) rubber spring cushions (no. 50701024) to track down, if anyone knows where I can get some, since Fiat wants an extraordinary amount of moolah for basically a rubber disc...

Meanwhile I have discovered (and bought .. but don't tell the Younger Mrs S. :D ) an all new nearside driveshaft, since at the price it would be rude not to. Gerrard had a pair of new spiders fitted as a stop-gap c. 9 months ago... but the rest (n/side outer CV in particular) is all factory vintage (2004/168,000 miles) so it's sloppy and has definitely seen better days.

Anyhow, now I need a driveshaft oil seal. When I looked a couple of years ago (for a clutch change) there were thousands around.. but in the end I decided mine wasn't soooo bad and left it. But now, since I'm going to be pulling the inner CV "cup" out, it's a good chance to fit a new seal.

It goes without saying that I can't find one on the usual parts sites or on fleabay. Meanwhile ePer is off the road so I can't get hold of the part number to help my search. Does anyone knoe the part number? The beast is a Jan 2004 1.9 JTD in 115bhp/85 kW flavour. It's red, if that makes any difference.

I presume, to recap, that the old seal just gets levered out with a screwdriver and the new one pressed into the slot.

My seal also appears to have a metal cap with holes or serrations on it. Is that a separate cap, or part of the seal? The seals I have seen (which don't fit mine) seem to be just a regular rubber ring. I remember from last time I looked the seal for the 115 had this cap/cover as part of the seal, so just checking (ePer down).

50701024 is a part number for a front suspension spring. The rubber ring that fits between the bottom of the spring and its mounting plate on the shock absorber is part number 50706623

Driveshaft oil seals are part number 71719539. They can be levered out with a flat blade screwdriver. The perforated metal cap is part of the oil seal.

Eythenkyo!

The rubber rings I wrote down the wrong number... the ring is #11 on ePer and the spring is #12 ... although I did check the price, in case I'd made the same mistake when I first had a look. No luck.. :D although I'll probably bite the bullet and bother my dealer for some new ones this weekend.

Meanwhile, I tracked down a seal in Germany.. postage is 3 times the cost of the seal, as you do.. so I ordered two. Might keep the second one, or sell it on eBay to get some money back... :D

For reference, here's some other numbers which might turn up the correct part for anyone else struggling to find one:

Fiat: 71719539
Meyle: 614 037 0003
Topran: 200529
Opel (Vauxhall): 374151

Dimensions are 9 x 35 x 54.9mm (although Meyle quotes 55mm, but the cross-reference is to the Fiat part number).
