Hi all,car in question is the arbarth.
2 week's ago driving home from work after 5 miles my temp gauge reading zero, stopped, restarted, gauge went to normal (half way).
Last night driving home after a couple of miles noticed gauge on very high. Stopped restarted went to normal .this morning normal.any ideas ,I'm thinking temp sensor but you lads might think different .cheers

The stepper motors on the temperature gauge can fail.

If your sensor is working correctly (I'm not sure how you would check it but on/off seems to solve the symptoms) then it's likely to be the stepper motor.

If you can solder you may be able to fix it yourself.. otherwise look up Yellowstilo on this forum and he'll be able to repair it for you for not much (although it's a ship to Holland job). He'd done hundreds.. :D

Returning to an old thread Ralph,I changed temp sensor ,gauge was OK for a while ,but now it reads full high all the time ( even with ignition off ! ) above you talk about soldering the stepper motor ,could you elaborate on that plz,I take it you mean the gauge its self .thx

On the back of the gauge there is a little white stepper motor (it looks a bit like the insides of an electric watch) and it converts the current/signal it gets from the sensor into movement of the needle.

If the stepper motor wears out/packs up then it obviously can't display a steady/correct reading.

On mine, the needle always stayed on 1/3 which was nice since it meant the car never needed refueling... :D but then it packed up altogether and dropped to zero.

A new motor solved the problem but the piece is soldered to the back of the instruments console, so I left it to Yellowstilo since there's no way I'd be able to remove it and attach a new one properly, with the usual family-sized soldering iron.

Give Yellow a PM... he might be able to eliminate that it's any other problem first.

Hi Ralf, above you talk about a new stepper motor solved your problem ( my temp gauge is now and has been for months stuck on full heat) are these motors available if so how do I come by one plz ,I am quite handy with a soldering iron so hopefully I could change it depending on how small the connections are ( old age ,the eyes not as good as they were !! Lol)

Thx, great mate ,has anyone fitted one of these, how difficult is it to do. P.s. I can't actually see any soldering connections in the various pictures on eBay ?

be carefull when soldering these gauges, keep the temperature low to avoid blowing the tracks.
